Hard drive and update issue

1st problem my 4gb hard drive shows only 665mb free but all folders are empty (0 KB).

2nd problem I continue to get an update message but when I click "YES" the window goes away and I am unable to login into XBOX Live, the update does not appear to download when I check my Xbox Live connection I get prompted to perform the update again with
no success and the test failed.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

What update? Hard drive issue? External hard drive issue? If it is the Preview update, you should be posting in the Preview Forum and not here.

 

X1 won't turn on!!

Update-

It appears to be an issue with the hard drive cables/hard drive. I took the hard drive out, turned it on and it turns on every time, but as soon I try starting it with the hard drive installed it turns on then off. The hard drive isn't the issue as I tested
my other Xbox hard drive as well.

 

Hi, sorry to say it looks like your internal memory unit may have failed which will mean sending the Xbox in for repair. This would explain the update issue you are experiencing.

You could try formatting the memory unit and you could get lucky.

Go to settings/ system/ storage. Highlight the memory unit and press Y on the controller, select the format option.

Should the memory unit format then that's great, if it won't format or formats and then becomes unformatted again the Xbox will need to be repaired

We've already tried formatting it, and it still says 665mb of available space. Will simply replacing the hard drive work, because then I can just buy one at a store for 20$, instead of spending more repairing it.

 

You may be able to get storage on a HDD, but you will still most likely encounter problems, seeing as internal storage is the primary storage device.

 

As Irixion says getting another storage device isn't going to help sorry. The update always installs to the primary storage device be that internal memory unit or hard drive and as that has failed and cannot be replaced by yourself I'm afraid you can't update
the xbox until you get the hardware fault fixed.
