Halo 4 War Games Multiplayer Issue

Alright, I just redeemed a two week xbox live gold membership trial code and War Games works just fine when I play through levels solo. The issue I'm having happens whenever I have a friend on the same console who also wants to play Co-op wargames with me.
I lead the local party and it lets me into the wargames episode selection screen but he has to sign in again. The second he signs in as any account (be it another xbox live enabled account, an account without xbox live, or a guest account with xbox live) wargames
kicks us out, the game signs out both profiles, sends me back to the main menu, and informs me that my account doesn't have the correct permissions to play multiplayer on xbox live from the same system.

It isn't a problem with my internet. Even though my provider isn't very good I can still get into wargames from my house and play solo.

My questions are; Does wargames not support multiplayer and am I being stupid for mot realizing it? Do trial gold memberships not allow multiplayer matchmaking/War games? Do I need to subscribe with a credit card to unlock that feature? Do multiple accounts
need to all have xbox live gold memberships to play a game simultaneously from the same system (which would be ridiculously unfair)? If there's something I'm obviously doing wrong here please let me know. Feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am able to play Halo Reach multiplayer. Is it the Halo 4 game?

All accounts would need to have Gold if your trying to play online. Custom games will work just fine for any account, be it Gold or Silver.

Trial memberships may not allow you to host a Guest. Though I'm not perfectly certain it does sound very familiar.

You can definitely host a Guest or two proper Gold accounts on one TV/360 in online matchmade games like you're trying, however. There's no doubt about that.

I think Bungie is no longer a subsidary of Microsoft but 343 is. 343 did do Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary which released like November last year. I like the idea of Sparton Ops being able to play co-op with up to 4 players. It's a multiplayer alternative
to the War Games. I'm better in Halo Reach multiplayer than I am in Halo 4 War Games. Just cause I haven't played War Games enough yet.

I've played every Halo game available for consoles except for the two Halo Wars games. My favorite Halo game for multiplayer is Halo: Reach. My favorite game for the story is Halo 4 with Reach being a very close second.

I'm a huge Halo fan and absolutely LOVED Halo 2's multiplayer, but it's time to move on. I'm quite content with Halo Wars, Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and eventually Halo 4.
