[Guide] Solving system update issues on Xbox 360

When starting up your Xbox 360 for the first time after you bought it, or after a long time again, the console might need a system update.

Sometimes these updates fail with a long error code. This guide should help you to get your console updated and working again.

First of all, check if your console is up to date.
Check this page for the current Xbox 360 system version. The page also describes how to find the version currently installed on your console. If both your console and the website show the same System version, you're already up to date.

Force an update check manually
Usually, the console tries to update itself automatically as soon as it connects to Xbox Live. But you can manually force an update check, by doing a connection test to Xbox Live.

Do this by going to the "Settings Hub" on the far right of the dashboard. Then go to the "System" tile in the upper left and finally to "Network Settings".

There do a connection test to Xbox Live. If the console is able to reach Xbox Live, it will also check for possible system updates.

Troubleshoot failing updates
If your console tries to do an update but fails, check
this page of possible update issue solutions as well as this
list of possible Xbox 360 update error codes, if your error code matches, then follow the instructions to resolve the error.

If the error code you get does not match any error on the list, try the following steps:

Clear the failed update:
If you can access the dashboard, to clear the failed update go to the
Settings hub on the far right of the dashboard. Then go to
System and under "Storage" enter the following button combination:

RB LB X RB LB X

Let the console do the maintenance, and restart the console.

If you can NOT start the console to a dashboard after the failed update, turn the console off, and hold the "bind" button on the console. The "bind" button is the small button on the console used to bind new controllers
to it. On the newer Xbox 360 models it's the small button next to the front USB flap, and on older Xbox 360 models, it's the small button next to the Memory Unit slots.

Hold down the bind button and start the console. Keep the bind button held, until you hopefully see the dashboard again.

If that does not work, you probably need to
get your console repaired.

Do the update offline and manually
If all else fails, an (almost) foolproof way of getting your console to update, is to update it offline via an USB flashdrive.

Prepare your USB flashdrive according to
these instructions. (WARNING! All data on your drive will be erased from the drive! Make sure to back it up!)

On your PC, download the Xbox 360 System Update.

After the download, double click on the downloaded ZIP file, and you should see a "$SystemUpdate" folder. Drag this folder to your USB flashdrive.

Make sure, that there are no other files on the stick besides the "$SystemUpdate" folder and it's content.

Now safely remove the USB drive from your PC (do not simply yank it out) and insert the USB drive into your console.

The console should detect the update, and hopefully update itself.
