[Guide] Getting Started with Spotify on Xbox One

As of 8th August 2017, the Spotify app is now available on Xbox One!

This guide should answer some of the likely questions around using the app for the first time, but if you need more help take a look at

    this FAQ
or the links at the bottom of this thread so you can get the assistance you need.

    Spotify App Features

    • Browse your own created playlists, or take a look at the available selection of curated playlists
    • Search for any song, artist or album in the Spotify library
    • Background listening! Continue listening to Spotify even while you play a game
    • Use Spotify Connect to control music playback from other supported devices, including phones and laptops
    • App works with both Free and Premium Spotify subscriptions
    • Xbox Live Gold subscription not required

    Installing the Spotify App

    • On your Xbox One console, navigate to the Store tab
    • Under the large banners, press the Search button
    • Type "Spotify" and press Menu (button with three horizontal lines)
    • In the results, select "Spotify Music - for Xbox"
    • Press Install

Logging In to the Spotify App

Now that you have the Spotify app installed, you probably want to log in. There are a couple options for this: the first is to log in using Spotify Connect on another device, essentially using the other device to authenticate your login; and the second is
    to use a normal password.

Note: If you do not already have a Spotify account, you can create one from this screen.

    • Logging in with Spotify Connect
      • This is the easiest way to log in to Spotify, and it means you'll already be set up to use Spotify Connect.
      • Open the Spotify app on another device where you are already logged in – a mobile or laptop device running iOS, Android, Windows 10 – and make sure it is connected to the same home/WiFi network as your Xbox One.
      • Open the Spotify app on Xbox One and select "Log In".
      • Follow the steps presented on the screen.
    • Logging in with Username and Password
      • Open the Spotify app on Xbox One and select "Log In".
      • After selecting "Log In", most of the screen is dedicated to Spotify Connect; to use username and password, you will need to navigate to "Other Ways to Log In" on the far right side of the screen.
      • Select "Password".
      • Input your account password and you are now logged in to the Spotify app.
    • Logging Out
      • In the app, select your profile icon in the upper-right.
      • Select "Log Out".

    Background Listening and Controlling Playback

When you have already started music playback on Xbox One, you can continue listening in the background even if you open a game and start playing. When this is happening, you can control the music in two ways: on the console, or by using Spotify Connect on
    another device.

Controlling Playback on the Console: With music playing, if you open the Guide (press central button with Xbox logo), there will be a play bar along the bottom*. You can use your controller to pause or skip songs.

Controlling Playback with Spotify Connect: While music is playing on your console, open the Spotify app on any other supported device where you're logged in and you can pause or skip songs from that device. You can even add songs to the
queue or change playlists entirely. As long as Spotify Connect is left to "Play from Xbox One", your music will continue playing from the console.

*Insiders testing the latest version of the Xbox One dashboard will see something slightly different: the play bar will still be in the Guide, but it will exist in the list of recent apps. Media controls can be accessed by clicking
A on the tile showing the artist and song currently playing. The specifics of this functionality in the new Dashboard are subject to change as the update progresses through its testing phases.

[Guide] Spotify on Xbox One – FAQ

If you've run into problems using the Spotify app on Xbox One, or simply have some questions about how it works, this FAQ guide could have you covered. If your question is not answered here, feel free to make a new thread about it
detailing your issue and the steps you've tried so far. Details on where to create your thread can be found at the bottom of this post.

I need help getting started with the Spotify app on Xbox One.

For instance, downloading and installing the app, logging in, or seeing an overview of the app features.

    Take a look at
    our Getting Started guide
    .

I’ve run into issues with the app! What should I do?

For instance, the app is not loading content, the app crashes when trying to open it, or your Xbox is behaving oddly after installing the app.

Though it may sound like a simple step, the first thing to try is to power cycle your console:

    • Press the power button for ten seconds until it beeps and switches off
    • Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet
    • Wait 5-10 minutes
    • Reconnect the cable and turn the console back
This step has a tendency to fix issues, especially ones that just crept up.

You should also try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. If neither of these steps work and you need more help, make a thread in this section and detail the steps you have already tried.

I’m only a Spotify Free subscriber. Can I use the app for Xbox One?

    Yes.

I don’t currently have a Spotify account. Can I use the app for Xbox One?

Yes, you don't need to have had a Spotify account before downloading the app, but you will need to create an account before being able to log in. You can do this from the Xbox One app itself, any other device with a Spotify app, or

    these suggestions from Spotify
for resolving common problems with not being able to hear or play your music.

Note: This list of suggestions is universal and not specific to the Xbox One app, so you may find some steps are not relevant to your platform, but most apply and are worth checking.

Can I download songs to my Xbox One’s hard drive for offline listening like I can on other devices?

No. At this time, the app only supports streaming.

Where can I suggest app features?

You can always discuss the app
    here in the Xbox forums
(make sure you’re on the Discussions tab and not Support), but to make formalised feature requests, or upvote requests from others, take a look at
    Spotify’s own Ideas page.

Further Assistance with the App or Your Spotify Account

spotify music makes game audio cut out(silent)

In the guide, with Spotify running and playing music (and maybe with a game in "focus" on screen), click on the Spotify icon and you'll get some media controls. It sounds like your volume balance is set all the way towards the music end of the scale; bring
it back towards game volume (the controller icon) and you should, hopefully, start hearing game audio again.

Let us know how you get on with this.

    Help??

Try starting up music playback on your phone (Spotify app) and then open the Spotify for Xbox One app, and in the phone app click on "Devices available" and select your console. That should "send" the playback to your console and let you continue listening
    to music there.

Let us know how you get on.

I don’t have any sound on spotify

When you've started playing music, open the guide and click on the Spotify app icon and see if your slider is on the far side towards the controller icon; if so, move it away a couple clicks and hopefully you'll be able to hear your music.
