I redeemed a code on my console today. No error message. Still my account isn't upgraded to Gold.

What went wrong?

Gold Membership Codes

For anyone who has a Gold membership with Xbox Live, have you seen these coupon offers? Supposedly, you can either get Xbox free or get a free trial offer for as long as one year. There might be a catch, but maybe they're just doing it to promote the Gold membership. Has anyone ever gotten a free trial?

Trials don't change your account status to gold. They only give you access to some benefits of online multiplayer.

But when I try to play FIFA 16 Ultimate Team I get the message (as before) that my account is not allowed.

Some trials will only work for the games they came with and there are some game modes that may not work with a trial.

as gold memberships overwrite trial memberships to give you the full gold membership

Unfortunately it is intended that Trials do not stack
with existing memberships. It's also mentioned on the support page Xbox Live Gold trial memberships

Notes

The Xbox Live Gold trial membership is associated with a single gamertag.

You can't add an Xbox Live Gold trial membership to an existing membership.

Only three trial accounts are available per console. This limitation cannot be reset.

After a user has created three trial accounts on their console, the user no longer receives a message that provides the opportunity to create an Xbox Live Gold trial account.

To sign up for the Xbox Live Gold trial membership, you must add a payment method to your account.

This also works in a vice versa way meaning that if you have a trial membership it will be lost if you purchase a gold membership
