Give Us Decent SHMUPS!

The XBox 360 had some of the best SHMUPS ever.

"Deathsmiles 2".

"Dodonpachi: Ressurection".

"Akai Katana"

"Under Defeat"

These are awesome fun on a big screen and can also be really challenging to play.

Built on the fundamental foundation of video games: "Bright Lights and Explosions".

I would love to see "The Cave Collection" released for the ONE as well as other decent SHMUPs.

Xbox One Shmups??

Shmups are shmups and have been around since the beginning of gaming. Common terms for the genre are "bullet h*ll" ,scrolling shooters, etc. Most are in an aircraft or spacecraft but today even twin stick shooters are getting lumped in the genre.

Jamestown is an example that most US gamers would be familiar with that's recent.

I'm having the same issue in the US. I tried HyruleBalverine's suggestion and so far it hasn't worked. I hope this gets resolved soon! I needs my shmups...

 

Yes, it would be very nice if Microsoft would start to diversify their Games Line-up.

Then again they "know their audience" and niche Titles of nostalgia past are not really for the Xbox Players.

 

Not a genre that interests me in the slightest.

Well to be fair how long did it take "Deathsmiles 2" to appear on the XBox 360?

I suppose if I try and keep things in perspective as the player base and popularity of the machine grows... then this may bring in a wider and more diverse genre of titles to the Xbox ONE.

Also the list of SHMUPs above there are pretty much all that are available for the West... but represent only a small percentage of the SHMUP catalogue that actually existed for their entire SHMUP catalogue.

Japanese Gamers eat up SHMUPs like fanatics but games like "Ginga Force", "Kesui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra", "Mamorukun Curse" and "Radirgy Noa Massive" (again to name only a fraction) were only released in Japan and region locked.

I suppose we may be stuck having top wait on the Future but hopefully it won't be too long a wait.

We're already seeing the biggest and most popular Manga/Anime titles like "Dragon Ball Z", "Naruto", "One Piece" and "Attack On Titan" make it to the XBox ONE.

Hopefully quality SHMUPs aren't too far behind.

Az, I recommend you check out Astebreed on your shiny new PS4, it's a fantastic little game.

 

^ Maybe but that's his favourite comment when others show an interest in things like backwards compatibility so works both ways.

 

I've tried BC games and they really show their age and don't always work as well as they did on the XBox ONE as the they did on the 360.

They serve no other purpose than to "encourage" people to make the jump to the current gen. There will be that "one game" or maybe even a couple of games that you really loved so much you can cope with the last gen look but there are so many great games
on the ONE you'd be crazy to buy old 360 games when you could be getting new ones.

Amazing SHMUPs are timeless.

Shigirui I shall check out "Asterbreed" on your recommendation.

There is "Raiden V" in the store and brings one of Japan's favourite SHMUPs to the ONE but they want "Full New Game Price" for the digital copy (though to be fair, on the MS Store £39.99 must look a bit of a bargain) and that's a bit greedy and there's not
a disc version to be found anywhere.

 

Okay shmups means short shoot them ups. Which means it's just a short shooting game?

 

"SHMUP" is short for "shoot 'em up".

The most popular Western example is probably "R-Type".

Usually Side Scrollers or Bottom to Top Scrollers.

"Ikaruga" is another that people may recognise from the 360.

They are characterised by your single ship fighting tons of enemies and at times dodging "Bullet Hell" where there are hundreds of enemy bullets on screen that you must avoid.

 

Haven't played many I do enjoy the genre though. Never heard that name shmup before
