You can't use account money to buy live.It's always been this way.

You need a xbox live subscription card,a credit/debit card or paypal account to buy a live subscription.

No one can give you live,you have to buy it using the methods I've mentioned.

as with any subscription service, it clearly states this will activate auto renew, you can cancel any time before renewal, simply demanding your money back does not work.

You can try asking for a refund in this way:
Go to your subscriptions page > manage subscription > cancel subscription
If you're eligible the system is going to tell you about this

If not, don't cancel the subscription yet and try filling this form:

https://support.xbox.com/forms/request-a-refund

In case your refund gets denied, you can actually file an appeal for the results of the refund.

All you need to do is to reply to the email that was sent to you by the refund team, you can reply with a detailed explanation so they can review your request again and grant you a possible exception.

If finally the refund isn't approved you are not eligible for it

You mentioned that it was gifted from your friend, does it mean that you live in the same country?
Also, does your account currently have an active subscription? From which region/country?

Kindly review your subscription page via https://account.microsoft.com/services if there are no past due or suspended subscription that may have caused the issue.

Be sure to redeem it directly from https://redeem.microsoft.com/ website.

Keep in mind that credits are deposited by the following 15th or 30th of the month after you have at least 5,000 pending. So if you get to 5,000 between the 1st and 15th, they are deposited at the end of the month. If you get to 5,000 between the 15th and
30th, they are deposited by the 15th of the next month.
