    Remember the system does not take gift cards anymore

    Visa Gift Card

    Lot of Visa Gift cards will work with the system, you will just need to register it online using your name and information. once that is done. "most" will work, sometimes however the system will not take it due to a lot of gift cards do not accept online
    purchases and what not.

    on turn you can always in turn use the gift card to purchase points or membership from a trusted retailer.

    That would be your issue. Codes from gifting are region locked. so your friend would have to also be in South Africa in order for it to work. You can try contacting support for a refund. Contact Us | Xbox Support

    yes he is in Canada and I am in South Africa
    That would be your issue. Codes from gifting are region locked. so your friend would have to also be in South Africa in order for it to work. You can try contacting support for a refund. http://support.xbox.com/contact-us

    The system does warn you when you're gifting that codes will only work for the region you purchase them for.
