GFWL and Age of Empires 3: Can't redownload the game through GFWL client

I was told to make a post here after a lengthy chat discussion with Microsoft's support. My problem is every time I log into GFWL client and try to redownload age of empires 3 I get: There was an error retrieving your purchase history. Please sign out and
try again later. I just want to redownload and play the game I bought.

I purchased Age of Empires III several years ago on the Games for Windows Live marketplace. The downloads from the GfWL client have been broken for years. Did Microsoft ever provide a new way to download the games purchased on GfWL, or alternately, provide
Steam keys for those games?

The error retrieving purchase history can sometimes be fixed by the whole reinstall process. It's not exactly elegant, and GFWL is a pain in the butt but at least you might be able to play the game you paid for.

 

Well I followed the instructions there, uninstalled GFWL and windows marketplace , rebooted and installed the latest GFWL client. Same thing occurs.

 

By chance is the GFWL client and marketplace allowed through any firewall/security settings you may have?

I know this other solution I'm going to propose sounds dumb. Run the GFWL client from the folder where its installed - don't use the shortcut. Right-click on it, go to properties and select the compatibility tab. Select it so that it runs for Windows
7 compatibility.

 

GFWL client is allowed through all firewall and security settings. Also, already ran it through compatibility and that also didn't work.

 

I get "there was an error retrieving your purchase history" error as well.

They should just say if they have no intention of providing everyone access to existing games. Saying one thing and doing another is low, even for MS.

Did you run the actual .exe file though? I've noticed that when I use the shortcut, even though it's in compatibility mode things don't always work properly. There'd be two executables in the folder - GFWLClient and GFWLive. Run the Client one.
