As many have stated, the new GamerTag system is being rolled out soon allowing for you to change your name.

That said, targeting "Dead accounts" is against the service, haha.

Yes, I kinda like the 5 year wait. Just got back in touch with a Xbox friend who was inactive for going on 3 years. Glad I didnt delete her and was super happy when I saw her come online.

im pretty sure this account has been inactive for alot more than 5 years because it has a xbox 360 profile picture and has no gamerscore.

Gamertags get recycled after the Xbox Live account is inactive for 5 years.

I didn't realize they updated the policy a couple months after that for the 5 years of inactivity.

Smwutches mentioned, Xbox just announced a new update for Gamertags. You basically can have the same (similar) gamertag as someone else now.
