Getting access to my Xbox PC games stored on secondary hard drive after a System Image...

This will be the THIRD time in three weeks that I will again have to reinstall nearly 2TB of my Xbox PC games from the XBOX store on my PC after upgrading my hard drive from an internal SATA SSD to an NVME SSD drive and I am simply not prepared to do this all over again, so I would appreciate an experienced moderator's help in resolving my technical problem. I have tried contacting MS but can't get through and the call back system simply does not work on your website! I will explain my PC setup and the issues I have been experiencing below:

    1) Firstly, my PC setup is as follows: I am running Windows 11 from an internal 1TB nvme drive (C drive) and I have stored all my XBOX PC games downloaded from the XBOX PC store app on another internal 2TB hard drive. (E drive). Prior to moving my OS to the nvme drive my OS was stored on a 1TB SATA SSD which I made a disk image of the system initially using MS Windows 7 System Image Restore tool. When my NVME drive arrived I used the MS Windows 7 System Image to set up the nvme drive as my new OS drive. For some reason each time I attempted to restore my new drive I would get an error preventing me for successfully restoring the new OS drive so I deleted the MS Windows 7 System Image, booted my system again using my original 1TB SATA SSD and tried to clone my OS drive to the NVME drive using Acronis True Image/Seagate Disk Wizard. However each time I attempted to boot from the new drive I got an error during the booting process (Inaccessible Boot Device) and no amount of the recovery troubleshooting steps in the windows recovery environment would fix the booting error, so I again plugged in my original SSD and made another system image but this time I used Acronis True Image/Seagate Disk Wizard including both the C & E drives in the hope that using this method of restoring my system would be successful in migrating my OS, app and games to the drives. However for some reason I was again getting the Inaccessible Boot Device error each time I attempted to boot from the NVME drive which was set as the boot device in my BIOS. I eventually resorted to fully wiping the NVME drive and copied the first two hidden partitions on my old drive to the new nvme and left unallocated space to install a fresh copy of Windows 11 to the unallocated space, and after windows successfully installed copied the last hidden partition to the NVME drive. This was the only way I could get Windows 11 to boot from my NVME drive. I then painstakingly had to re-download all my games again via the XBOX PC app to my E drive, and backed up the system again but this time I used Acronis True Image/Seagate Disk Wizard to create the system image as I simply could not trust the MS Windows 7 System Image Restore tool to do such an important back up of my system. When my system was all set up I wiped the SATA SSD.

    2) Secondly, yesterday, I was installing a modded AMD graphics drivers which messed up my system. I thought no problem I would restore my system from the saved system image and be up and running again, and hopefully once that was done I would be able to access all of my games backed up to the point of the backup and reinstall may be 4 or games I had downloaded earlier this week. However, I am again getting the Inaccessible Boot Device error each time I attempt to boot with my nvme drive. I have had to resort to restoring the OS again to my original 1TB SATA SSD. Initially after restoring my original SATA SSD I had problems with not being able to log into my system due to having to re-set my pin all over again (which took me almost a day to resolve) but now I have access to the OS on this drive all my games on the E drive won't open and again need to be re-downloaded.

    3) Once my test OS drive is fully setup and I successfully have access to my games library, I want to clone that disk to my nvme drive and then be able to have a working system backup in case I need to restore my system again without having to again re-downloaded all my games again. Could someone help me to do this.

    4) Finally, (and this is the only part of this post where I am making a complaint about MS customer support) I understand due to the COVID situation that MS workers may be working remotely, and as such MS have had to change ways how customer can get in contact with your support teams, but it is getting beyond a joke trying to get technical support right now from MS - you can't get through to talk with someone from any of your technical support teams and the online virtual assistants are unable to resolve complex technical issues. Also the online requests for call backs either never allows you to leave your number so a call back can be made or when it does accept customer's numbers no one calls back. Yesterday I opened three requests for technical support to call me backs and to date no one has.

    Many thanks.

    .

    :)

Installation von Spielen auf alter Festplatte in neuem PC?[Installation of games on an old hard drive in a new PC?]

    Hi Nott,

Thanks for the reply. This is a difficult one as the old hard drive has files from the entire system of the old PC. This could mean the error is system files, game files or any other ones. The game pass folder are not accessible as they are for games you
technically do not own. As you get them through game pass. Is the old hard drive a secondary one or the primary? As the best thing would be to reformat the drive so it would match the new PC.

    Thanks,

    Brad

It's not the primary hard drive, but I really don't want to reformat it as it has almost 2 TB of data on it (games, work files... - and everything except for these games works perfectly fine). I'd have to buy another external hard drive just to save my files.

Is it not possible to simply delete these files? By letting the Xbox app manually detect it or anything like that?

Installed games and Downloaded content barley works?

Not all game updates are stored in the secondary cache, some games store them in the user area of the hard drive. However since you are getting read errors playing demo's, it does sound like your hard drive is failing. How old is it?

    Hello Mijac,

Thank you for reaching out to us about your issue!

Have you tried changing the default save location for your applications in the Microsoft settings and your Xbox app?

To change the default app storage location on Windows:

    • Open the start menu (Windows Key)
    • Open your "Settings"
    • Open "System"
    • Once in "System" select "Storage"
    • Select "Advance Storage Settings"
    • Select "Where new content is saved"
    • Select the drive you'd like to save your apps to by default in the drop-down menu under "New apps will save to" (ex: Local Disk (C:))
To change the default storage location in the Xbox app:

    • Open the Xbox app
    • Select your profile picture at the top right of the screen
    • Select "Settings"
    • Navigate to "General" on the left panel
    • Select the drive you'd like to save your apps to by default in the drop-down menu under "Change where this app installs games" (ex: (C:) 320 GB disk space remaining)
Once you've done that, try restarting your PC afterwards to see if the Xbox app will recognize the games installed on the alternate SSD. It's pretty hard to pinpoint the exact issue but I believe it's in the disk backup process. If so, this may be a question that's best answered by a member on the Windows forum.

Where is my 101 Mb of storage on my Xbox 360

it isnt just the xbox that does this, every computer's hard drive does this too. my pc and laptop have a 500GB hard drive but i could only use 460GB of space. that's the way it is, as it stores the start up and system files.
