  1. Gestures actually aren't that bad at all!

So, because my good friend D33dles has been openly praising how wonderful the Kinect gestures are after a recent update preview update (try saying that 3x fast), my brother and I decided to give it a go. We downloaded the gesture tutorial to learn how it
works and man, I gotta say it helped A LOT. There were things I was trying to do with gestures that didn't quite work because I was thinking it worked like it does on the Xbox 360 - boy was I wrong! If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you go
through this tutorial. It's awesome and involves a horse that turns into a pegasus that then turns into a unicorn, so it becomes a... Pegacorn? I don't know what you'd actually call it, but it looked like a horse with wings and a horn which was amazing. Gestures actually aren't that bad at all! ;)

The gestures are actually very simple, easy, accurate, and even intuitive:

Activate gesture control - Hold out a hand in front of you with an open palm (no waving required).

Select item - Highlight the item you want to select, press forward with an open palm, then pull back.

Open menu - Highlight the item you want to select, press forward with an open palm and hold.

Open main window (game or app) - Hold your hands out in front of you, palms open, then close them as if you were grabbing something. Bring your hands together until the outer knuckles to your thumbs touch (almost as if you were closing curtains).

Return to home screen - Simply do the opposite of opening the main window. Put your hands in front of you with fists closed and the outer knuckles of your thumbs touching, then pull your hands apart from each other.

Scrolling left/right/up/down - To scroll through a menu or a screen, hold out 1 hand in front of you, close your fist as if grabbing something, then pull your hand in the desired direction.

Zooming in/out (works in IE app) - Hold out 1 hand in front of you, close your fist as if grabbing something, then either pull towards or away from you.

    Advice:

I find that most people who are new to using Kinect gestures have a tendency to exaggerate their movements which can actually make things harder - don't do that. I've discovered that the Kinect can actually detect very subtle movement and there is
no real reason to throw your arms all over the place. Try the gestures slowly to get used to them (which shouldn't take long), then do it a little bit faster on the 2nd and 3rd try. You'd be amazed at how well it actually works. The only real hard part (IMO)
is keeping your hand steady enough to select something on the screen, but other than that, it's absolutely fantastic! Give it a whirl and let me know how it works for you. Enjoy! Oh, and you're welcome. Gestures actually aren't that bad at all! ;)

    :)

  2. D4 to Release Tomorrow

Lost, try the Kinect Sports Rivals demo and use subtle gestures instead of exaggerated ones and you'll see just how precise the Kinect can actually be with games (and actually is) - I think the lack of response just comes from poor design in large part to
the developers that aren't intimately familiar with the tech.

  3. Is Aliens:CM actually that bad?

I thought Aliens:CM was shockingly average to below average; but I can totally see how Alien fans would absolutely hate the game.

When I wave at the Kinect my mum thinks I'm going mental ^^

Gestures are kind of fun though especially in Zoo Tycoon for anyone who knows and plays the game on Xbox 1 especially the play with animal using the Kinect sensor.

I haven't really tried gestures on the Dashboard except when calibrating the sensor. Voice commands are locked for NZ locale but theres a way around this which I tried in January and worked. Change your locale temporarily to Australia locale which is only
2 hours behind NZ time and wow this thing called Kinect is ready to carry out voice commands. Kinect can identify me visually too and you don't even have to hold up QR codes right near the Kinect sensor it can read them from a distance.

  5. I find the pad easier and quicker .

Xbox does not recognise my brand new tv. And I have disconnected my sky pass through cable , as they both have to be on permenantly .

If either go into standby , they loose connection .

I hope they make a triple A title for it , otherwise it is not much use .......for me . .

I still find voice commands faster in most instances, but have been using gestures more frequently since the update.

The tutorial was a help. Thanks for posting.

    Peace, J.R.

  7. You're welcome, D33dles. Gestures actually aren't that bad at all! ;)

I find that the gestures work best when used in conjunction with voice commands. Also, it may not be as fast as using a controller in a lot of cases, but some of it, like with opening the big window or returning home is actually faster than using voice,
I think. In addition, knowing how to do it may be useful if you don't have a controller nearby (while watching a TV or movie for example), but still need to be quiet (for example, if you're watching something while people are sleeping).
