Generic 120 gb hard drive only having 32 gb?

Hey everyone, I have a 4gb xbox 360, but need more space for it. I bought a transfer cable and a generic 120 gb hard drive, but it only had 32gb. It wasn't able to hold xbox data, so I configured it defaultlay and customized it. Both times it said only 120gb.
Also it says 120gb on the hard drive itself, so I don't know what to do. Am I doing it wrong or something? The transfer cable came with a disc too, but that won't open. PLEASE HELP!!!

    :)

Without knowing the full issue I would have to say the issue lies with your hard drive. If it is an external drive then only 32 GB will be available to you.

If it is an internal drive that you purchased then you should know that is an illegal drive and could result in your console being banned. No 120 GB drives were ever made for the Slim console. Only 250 or 320 GB drives are available.

    120 GB HARD DRIVE

That's normal, mine was the same way. It has to do with how a hard drive is formatted, and how space is measured by the manufacturer and by operating systems. You probably have some demos and stuff included on the drive which could be removed. There's nothing
you can do to regain the rest of the space so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm afraid there aren't too many good news.

For an HDD to be treated by the Xbox 360 as a system HDD, it needs to be pre-partitioned for the purpose, which requires a bespoke Xbox 360 HDD. Microsoft does not support third party HDDs for this use but only their own.

If you have an Xbox 360 S or E where the HDD fits internally in a slot, they might still be available new. If you have an older type Xbox 360 where the HDD fits onto the top/side of the system, you need to get a used one. Be wary of modified or counterfeit
HDDs though, as they violate Microsoft IP and the Terms of Service, and may cause Microsoft to block the console.

The transfer cable is intended for use when transferring data between bespoke Xbox 360 HDDs, e.g. transferring from an original Xbox 360 "sidecar" style HDD to an Xbox 360 S or E internal HDD, or from a smaller to a bigger bespoke HDD. When adding other
kinds of storage to an Xbox 360, the transfer cable it is not necessary. Also, from what I remember, later system updates added the transfer functionality to the system software itself and made the disc redundant.

Regular portable HDDs are treated similarly to USB memory sticks if used to create storage for game content; the Xbox 360 creates a folder with predefined files to act as a virtual Xbox 360 memory card. This is limited to a maximum of 32 GiB (minus space
taken up by system content). The rest of the drive is left empty (you can use that space for other things but some advise against it).

So, without an original Xbox 360 HDD of the right type for your system, you're limited to <32 GiB of additional storage per drive, and I think a maximum of two outboard drives at a time. Sour grapes I know, but that's the way they designed it.

    120 GB HDD Storage Issue

Thanks for the reply. I was unaware that a 120 gb hard drive for the slim was unofficial, but now I know the only official hard drives for the slim is the 250 gb and the 320 gb.

    Cant play my downloaded game

There is no official 120 gb hard drive for the Slims. You would need an official MS hard drive in order to play an original Xbox game. The only official hard drives for the Slims are 250 gb and 320 gb.

In need of some storage (Memory)

Since the Slim models have come out, it's harder to find hard drives for the older 360s. If you can find them there are 60gb, 120 gb, 250 gb, and 320 gb models available. Since they're harder to find the prices may vary and you may end up with a non-authorized
    hard drive.

You can use any USB flash drive that is over 1gb of storage. You can have up to 2 devices plugged in at a time and only up to 16gb each (for an additional 32 gb of storage). Amazon has several 16 gb flash drives for about $10.
