Haha, do you even listen to yourself?

Mass Effect 3 came out in 2012 and had an RNG based loot system with microtransactions for the coop mode and that wasn't just for cosmetic items either.

Also I'm glad you know my spending habits better than I do when it comes to this kind of content and even so, I wouldn't need to justify what I spend my money on to the likes of you.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to pretending you don't exist.

Who would buy a "Mass Effect" game for the Multiplayer?

If EA managed to implement that shady practice last gen then they saw those types of people coming from a mile off and fleeced them accordingly.

No wonder Microsoft and EA are such good chums.

@Blue - I agree that it looks like Halo 5 have used RNG to sell more REQ packs to the 'want it now' generation and it is a very sly tactic, but it's nothing new. I just don't like how all loot systems are going that way, some games I actually enjoy the grind,
but I don't want to be constantly grinding in every, single, game. It's part of the reason I haven't played a single game online in Halo 5, my mentality was if I'm going to be doing that, I'm just going back to Destiny, haha.

Anyway, we'll see how it plays out with Gears 4, I didn't like the idea of the cards for Rise of the Tomb Raider, but that ended up not being so bad because it's really unnecessary to spend money on them.

    [/quote]

Therein lies the conundrum IMO... your idea of the games "I actually enjoy the grind" won't be the same as mine, nor should they be expected to be. Therefor, by default, I don't like the fact that any loot systems are going that way.

A lot of people on Waypoint comment how much they miss the system in Reach, where you could earn your gear by accomplishing something in the game and you knew what you had to do if you wanted something. There was no "push the button and hope you got something
    good" which I despise.

That's why I tend to disagree with D33dle's comment about if it's "not my money so why should I care"... It isn't about whether or not it's my money and it isn't about the fact that I'm not required to spend on micro transactions. People can spend their
money (or their allowance lol) however they want. But if more people keep blindly throwing their money into these systems that are designed to be more beneficial if you do, then more and more games will adopt them.

So in that aspect, just because it isn't my money and just because I don't have to buy "cards" isn't going to save systems like Reach had from falling by the wayside in favor of systems that almost make me want to puke. lol

Given a choice between a system where I can either grind or spend just for the privilege of pushing a button and hoping for something good, while cluttering up my UI with a bulky menu full of unwanted junk, vs a system with a clear and plannable way to get
things I like... it's an easy choice for me. Hell, if they came out with a system where I actually had to buy certain things (cosmetic only) to get really cool looking gear, I'd buy that game before I'd buy one with a built in slot machine. But of course,
the slot machine will make more money, won't it...

The reason for not caring is I vote with my wallet, and will spend my coin on something other than video games. I bought Black Ops III because of the enjoyment had with II; Treyarch and Activision should be expecting about a $100.00 less on the next release
(Base game and season pass.). Infinity Ward died with Ghosts and Sledgehammer hasn't seen a dime from me.

People will continue to blindly throw money at greedy corporations, and smile while doing it. Lol. I've never been a sheep and will continue with evaluating games (Or anything else for that matter.) on a "cost versus value" basis. So if micro-transactions,
etc., kill the desire to purchase and play video games...well, just more money to put into another hobby.

    Peace, J.R.

  6. @Blue - When I say I enjoy the grind, I enjoy it on games that makes sense to me like Borderlands where certain loot can drop from bosses and enemies, I don't like any RNG card systems for the reasons both you and I have explained. I like working towards
guaranteed goals and at least when grinding in Borderlands it does feel like I'm somewhat guaranteed a roll of the legendary I'm after as the loot pools are very specific, whereas the card systems have the entire loot pool behind them to give you even less
chance of getting the item you want.

So with games like Halo and Gears where historically you've had to achieve certain goals to unlock the items you want, I think the RNG card systems don't make sense other than the developers trying nickel and dime us.

I completely understand if you don't like RNG loot systems even in games like Borderlands though, but I just thought I'd quality what I meant about enjoying RNG loot grinds.

  7. Heh... you guys both get a like, as you're pretty much on the same basic page as I am, I think. Did Borderlands have a way to buy "packs" or something that I forgot about? I don't really recall not liking its RNG system.

My main issue isn't RNG, in and of itself. At least not completely. It's when they remove a system with clearly defined ways to get specific gear, like Reach, and replace it with a slot machine that encourages those who are willing to spend to keep spending
    just to get it.

Take Destiny for instance. It was (the last I played) a true RNG type system. Everybody had to do the same thing (grind) to get gear. What I didn't like about it was the fact that you could do a low level strike and get one of the most powerful, or most
desired weapons in the game from an ankle biter guarding the entrance while getting a bunch of lesser gear from the boss. It just seemed stupid to me, in that aspect.

But, at least with that system you could look forward to the possibility that, at any given moment, your grind could net you a really awesome reward, regardless of what you already do or do not have in your inventory.

With H5, however, it's worse (IMO). It's a stacked RNG system. It's literally bloated with thousands of custom armor, weapon, vehicle variants & skins, stacked into tiers. And the only way to get to the 'good' stuff at the top is to unlock everything in
the lower tiers first. When the grind isn't really even all that fun, this is RNG at its worst if you ask me... and the fact that they allow you to bypass it by simply buying your way through it does more to prove that fact than disprove it to me.

Given a choice, I'll take Destiny's RNG over H5's... not saying I'd be overjoyed with the idea... lol

^Completely agree and we are most definitely on the same page. There are no packs in Borderlands, I was just using it as an example of RNG that I enjoy.

Destiny's RNG is annoying because a lot of the time you have to wait for the weekly resets to continue the grind for something you want, whereas Borderlands I can grind anything, anytime, to my heart's content.

With Gears 4 I'm dreading the idea of wanting a character skin and it being mixed up in these cards that have weapon skills, horde accessories and the challenges or whatever. In Gears 3 I wanted superstar Cole skin so bad and you had to get 100 MVP medals.
You can bet I grinded that out with bots nearly immediately, haha.

    Right.

Just because it never happened before doesn't mean it's something new, even if it's only happening now.

I suppose I can see how you came to end up supporting being taken advantage of this way.

It's a tactic that only really took off this gen.
