    Gears 5 won't install to hard drive (D) [FIXED]


    Hi there.

    After completing Gears 5 on Xbox One, I wanted to give it a try on PC. I am subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, so the download is available for me.

    When I try to download via the Microsoft Store, it only lets me select disk C (my SSD) when I'm asked to "select compatible drive with X GB". When I try to download via the Xbox Beta app, it lists both C and D, but D is greyed out and has a warning icon
    and the menu tells me to select a drive with NTFS format.

    What's funny is that both my SSD (C) and HDD (D) are formatted to NTFS, so this doesn't make sense.

    I have rebooted several times, checked for updates, cleared the Store cache with wsreset.exe as admin, but nothing has changed.

    I have used my Game Pass Ultimate subscription to play and install games like Crackdown 3, ReCore and Ori on disk D and I even went as far as to initiate an installation for Forza Horizon 4 just to confirm that this specifically impacts Gears 5.

    EDIT: Actually, I found the same error for Blair Witch and Clustertruck, so it's not only GoW5 after all.

    128GB SSD/1TB HDD

    EDIT2: The Xbox (Beta) app received an update today (05/11/2019) and I am now able to download Gears of War 5. A bit late, but not too late.

    hey my friend,

    just wanted to ask if this issue was fixed?
    I noticed when I tried to install Moonlighter it would install into my D drive, but when I try gears, dead cells, pretty much anything else, it will not install. And when I try to install through the MS store, it won't even let me try to choose the D drive.

    drive D is not suitable for this case, the installer unpacks everything on drive C and then performs the installation, if you don't have 157gb on drive C it won't install.

    I have the same problem with Gears 3. All my other games (newest game I own before Gears 3 is Black Ops) work just fine with the 360 but not Gears 3. I managed to get all the way into the game menu but it will then freeze, the majority of the time it won't
    even get that far and it won't read the disc to install it to the hard drive. Luckily I have another 360 that does work with the game, so I installed the game to the hard drive on that 360, moved the hard drive back to the 360 that won't work with Gears 3
    and tried again and it still has the same problem. Since the 360 works with games that don't use the new format it appears that my DVD drive is not compatible with the update (the update did install fine, and as I said, the system still works great with all
    of the 'older' format discs). Since that is the case I see no reason why I, or others who have the same issue, should have to pay to have our consoles 'fixed' to be compatible with the new disc format. I read that Microsoft somehow identified those who would
    run into this issue with the update and supposedly sent out emails to those affected and would replace their 360s for free; but as far as I know, I did not receive said email and yet it would appear that my 360 is definitely not compatible with the new disc
    format.
