Games won't play in HDR?

Hi all,

I recently purchased a new Sony X80D series UHD HDR TV and an Xbox One S as a UHD Disc player mainly, although I have been playing Gears 4, Forza and Halo 5 on it. As you can imagine, I was eager to see what the two HDR compatible games looked like on the
new display, however, neither Forza Horizon 3 nor Gears of War 4 will enable their HDR Modes for me.

In the 4KTV details section on the console's settings menu, we have:

(Tick) Your TV supports 4K UHD (60Hz)

Info symbol for: Your TV Setup does not support 4K 10-bit for 24, 50 or 60Hz (and in the TV's specs on the website, 10 and 12-bit are both compatible)

(Tick) Your TV supports HDR video

(Tick) Your TV supports HDR gaming.

So, basically, what gives? I've spent a week not calibrating this stupid system and TV and cannot get the games to play in HDR. In Forza 3, I've seen images on the net of an "HDR Brightness" slider that will not appear to me, indicating the game is running
in SDR, and Gears 4 makes no indication of being played in HDR. I also tried HDR on Deus Ex on PS4 and the colour output of the game did definitely change, but for the worse, turning HDR off in the menu made colour look far better. Is there some kind of incompatibility
with my TV, do I need to change HDMI ports or does this TV simply not have true HDR support and have I been fooled by it? Any help would be golden.

Have you set the HDMI to 4k mode? I have a samsung and need to enable the hdmi socket to take 4k should be somewhere like settings external inputs also you need 18 Gbps HDMI cable.

Oh and make sure it's in the right port for 4k as some only use HDMI 1 for 4k

Yep. I think there will be a lot of dissapointed people when they find out their 4K HDR TV won't play Xbox One 4K games because they don't have a full 18Gig HDMI pipe.

The requirement from the X to have 4K @60 and 30 Bits just to play a 4K game seems off. I can see where the bandwidth requirement would be there for 4K @60 with HDR, but I'd like to play the game in either 4K without HDR or 1080P with HDR but the current
setup on the X (and S) will not let you do this.

Odd thing is that I played Horizons:Zero Dawn on my PS4 Pro and the first thing it did was tell me I could have either 4K or HDR but not both. I chose HDR and the game looks fantastic. I can't believe the XBOX One X won't do this.

So, if you have a display that does 4K@ 24 with HDR then the XBOX One X is just a nice game machine that will play videos in HDR for you but none of the UHD features are available to you for gaming.

Microsoft, surely you can change this and allow HDR in 1080P?

Hi,

Regardless of whether you own a One S or a One X, if a game supports HDR it will do so on both consoles.

So if you owned a One X and the game was Enhanced with HDR, you'd get this 'enhancement' plus HDR. On the One S you'll just get HDR.

Overwatch is not an HDR title, neither on One X or One S.

If you were playing a none HDR game with HDR on then you must have overridden the setting on your TV/monitor. The colours will change, but it won't look right.

HDR is not a feature exclusive to One X.

One major issue to look out for is that on a lot of 4K HDR TVs when using HDR the input lag is very high and therefore terrible for gaming, a lot of TVs won't even recognise HDR content in game mode!!

Hi,

In addition to Arminator's comments, HDR is best set to 'Auto' on your TV/monitor.

Setting it to always on won't look right for SDR content, luminecence and colour will be all wrong on SDR games and video content with HDR forced to on.

With HDR set to Auto, your display will only use HDR when HDR content is detected.

Unless I'm reading it wrong - which I hope I'm not - the OP is stating that Fortnite and Apex aren't showing HDR, but the others are. Fortnite
doesn't support HDR, it's an SDR only game. I'm pretty sure this applies to Apex as well.

If you run HDR on a none HDR enabled game, it won't look right. All the colours and saturation will be far too high. If HDR is set to auto and is working for other games that have HDR, then that's how it's supposed to work.
