Games pass and live gold confusion

Hi, total XBOX illiterate mum trying to sort out what on earth I need to subscribe to so my son can play Sea of Thieves with game chat.

Upon expiry of the one month game pass that came with purchase, where he happily played sea of thieves and a couple of other games, I re subscribed to what I thought was game pass but instead was XBOX LIVE GOLD.

After that It would not let him play sea of thieves. I realised my mistake (I think) so also resubscribed to GAME PASS so I then had both.

He was then able to play.

Thought I would cancel the XBOX LIVE GOLD as it seemed I didn't need it as he happily played sea of thieves without it with just GAME PASS before. BUT...….upon cancelling, he was again unable to play sea of thieves. As well, a message to resubscribe to
game pass came up.

So re subscribed to it..... and again have both.

Beyond frustrated with online support where it says you can ask to talk to a person anytime which is utter BS at it sends you around in circles over and over and over again that it nearly gave me a nervous breakdown. Does anyone have a number? (Australia)

Why was he able to play Sea of Thieves with only game pass before?

Why do I now need both of them for him to play? (game pass and Live Gold)

What am I doing wrong?

Please help.!

You made a bit of confusion, so I write how things are:

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: ALL INCLUSIVE

Xbox Live Gold
Xbox Game Pass
Xbox Game Pass PC

Xbox Game Pass:

Available games library + play anywhere
No Xbox Live Gold

Xbox Game Pass PC (3.99 $)

Only available PC games library
No Xbox Live Gold

If you buy the xbox game pass/ultimate game pass before purchasing xbox live gold. Your game pass benifts will only last for the time it lasts. Although a good to know trick, is buying gold first and then the ultimate game pass, and your 6months gold will
be converted into 6months of ultimate. Hopefully you understand, I also found it confusing at first

Do you have anyone else that uses the console that my have had a gold subscription? Gold can be shared. Or if he plays on the PC it would not require gold.

You can either play a game in full, or subscribe to Game Pass and play available games with it such as Sea Of Thieves. This works good when you're playing locally on your own, but if you want to play online in a multiplayer game, you need to subscribe
to Xbox Live Gold as well.
