games not installing to xbox external drive

my xbox started installing to my internal drive even though it is set to install to external by default. the external drive shows and it shows the games on there but when you select manage it doesn't show the game just saved data and sometimes nothing. if
i select one of the games on internal it doesn't give the option to move to external. the games on external do play so i am stumped. when i got to external and select view content it shows all content including internal. any ideas????

If you have an external hard drive could you try deleting a game and installing it directly to the console's hard drive to rule out issues with the external drive itself?

Yes, I have an external hard drive connected to my Xbox, and the game appears to be installed on the external hard drive.

I'm gonna be more specific: the game doesn't accept installation on external storage. Whether it's flash drive or external hard drive, the game isn't meant to install on external storage connected through USB just like Need for Speed Rivals on Xbox 360.
You need to install it on an internal hard drive (media hard drive). The link I provided to you aren't external hard drives; they're internal hard drives for the Xbox 360:

Is it an external USB drive?

If it is I had this problem.

I would suggest changing where the xbox app itself is being installed to an internal drive then making the change so that the games themselves are installed to the external USB drive.

Hi Joey,

Thanks for the update on the issue. Try installing the game specifically on the internal drive instead of the external drive. Once installed and launch, then move it to the external HD. Personally have had this issue with games on an external drive. Once
installed on internal they worked great.

Xbox Series X|S games can only be installed on the console's internal storage or the external Seagate SSD card. Link here. External drives are too slow for those games. The external hard drive can only be used to install backward compatible games (Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One).
