Games disappear from xBox S

I can’t add to similar threads because they’re locked so here’s a new one. Created a new account just to rant about this and to give the issue more visibility.

Not everyone has a fibre optic internet line in their house. When I got my son his xbox at Christmas I specifically wanted one with discs as we have a mediocre rural internet connection. Still, upon getting him a few games I soon learned that I needed to install several massive updates before he could play even 1 minute of a game (Forzas, Halo, Ark). So off to my office on a Sunday I went, in the city where we have a decent wired connection of about 200Mbit/s. It still took me literally all day to install the updates, but hey, I wanted my son to be able to play during the Christmas holidays.

Fast forward 9 months later. My son has been playing these games with no issues ever since. Yesterday morning he starts the xBox and Ark and Halo are simply… gone. Uninstalled completely. In the MS games library they are shown as “owned”, but a reinstall is needed. (Mod Removed)!? How does this happen?

So here I am at my office again on a Sunday afternoon reinstalling about 1/2 Terabyte of game content over a 200Mbit/s connection. Absolute (Mod Removed). How do people do this at home without completely abusing their internet connection and speed? More importantly, how do games simply disappear from the console??!?

Judging by the other threads with similar topic this is a known problem with no solution (yes, we tried “console reset” advice), no go. Very frustrating, thanks for reading my rant.

I understand your frustration, but large updates are a thing now for nearly all gaming systems. There's not a lot you can do about that. If you're not playing online, you can set the home console first, and then disconnect the console from Xbox Live. Once you do this, all the games on the console will continue to function in offline mode without the need for updates.

Of course, if the console is offline, your son will not be able to play online.

As for a game disappearing, this isn't something that should be happening in general use. However, if the console is online and a game requires an update, the cancelation of the update will remove a game in its entirety, which would require the game to be downloaded completely again. This is not a bug. Since updates overwrite parts of the previous install, cancelling the update would render the install as corrupted/damaged.

I guess Microsoft should really look at creating a warning for this, but as yet, this has not been done.

Thank you for providing us with this insight.

In regards to the game you speak of, the only version of this title we have on the Store is

Fallout 3. There is no version of the "Game of the Year" [GOTY] edition to download digitally.

That being said, if you installed in physically via your disc, this would indicate why game does not show up in your Ready to install section of your
Games and apps.

Alternatively, you could own a digital version of your game, and you could install that to play the base game, but since you have all the downloadable content [DLC] attached to the physical copy, you would have to insert that into your console in order to
have access to this.

This is also the case for any specific games that carry that GOTY anagram, such as the Fable 2 Platinum Edition, that includes all the DLC on the disk, but if you try to use a regular version of the game, you will be unable to load your save data. Its a
lil different in that sense, however I have no experience with Fallout 3 GOTY edition as I no longer have that title physically :c and you need to use that 2nd disc in order for you to access the DLC in Fallout 3.

I only own a physical copy. It was installed using the disc. I guess that it could have been updating after the storm about a week ago when I lost power for a few minutes. But typically uninstalled games go to the ready to install list until the user removes
them or reinstalls them so I found it odd that it was not there. Thanks for answering my question. In case someone else has this issue but your answer does not apply is there another reason that this could happen?

Hi SheLuvCere,

A couple things you can try is logging out of you xbox profile then log back in. Sometimes that sorts liscense issues. The next thing is to go to "My Games & Apps" and find your title and then use the option button on your controller to "Manage Game and
Add-ons" and see if it is able to re-download.

All else fails you should contact support to investigate further.

Maybe you Have install the Digital Copy by when this game was disponibilize in Game Pass and this game now out of the Game Pass?
