    I use an 8tb external Seagate hdd for storage on my Series X. I have used it for a couple years before on one x and one s before that. I've had it attached to my series x since launch day.

    I have around 300 games on the external and 10 on internal on my series x. Recently (about a month) when I search for updates it searches for about 4-5 minutes and throws up an error saying "could not complete action" or something like that. Then I get the "no updates available" screen.

    All 300+ games show up in my games and Apps and are able to play/move/copy with no problem so I know the external hdd is working. Everything (including finding updates) worked fine until about a month ago.

    If I unplug the external and search for updates again it finds updates for the games stored on internal almost instantly.

    If I move a game to internal it also then finds the update.

    I was thinking that I had too many games installed and it couldn't cache that many at once so I uninstalled about 100 games from external. It now has 300, was 400. This didn't fix it.

    I have tried hard resets and even a full factory reset to no avail.

    The only thing that I can think of is that maybe those games that are optimized for series s/x can't be updated while stored on external for some reason. I doubt it though because they were stored there the whole time, even when updates were working.

    Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated

    I thought the X had been designed to "only" work with the designated Seagate 1TB drive (the one that costs £250 or whatever it is)
    No, not quite. Series X|S games can only run from internal or expansion card, but Xbox One games can still play directly from USB 3.0 mechanical drives or SATA SSD's with USB adaptors.

    You can Store Series X games on external USB drives, but you can't run them there.

    Doesn't help with your issue but I'm surprised that an external storage even works with the Series X as I thought the X had been designed to "only" work with the designated Seagate 1TB drive (the one that costs £250 or whatever it is)

    Figured it out. Warframe was currupted. It was only 29gb for some reason. Uninstalled it and game updates work again.

    I'll try that, I have another 4tb external to move them to then unplug it as they won't all fit on internal.

    I hope it works but I'm not counting on it. I've had optimized for x/s stored on it the whole time and it found all the updates before.

    Hello there,

    I also suspect the same thing that the games that are optimized for series x should be on internal. Try separating only the series x games from the other games. Otherwise, if you're an xbox insider, update your console first and power cycle it a few times meaning unplug completely for 10 minutes and then turn it back on. If all else fails, contact xbox support. Hope it helps!
