Hello Microsoft Team

I have an inquiry about xbox gamertags,

Because there is a gamertag that I really wish I had but because it is taken by someone that hasn't played xbox in over 5 years and it's really sad to see my favourite gamertag not being actively used by someone and it's just sitting there being unused.

My inquiry is that Microsoft should make people that has not played Xbox in over 5 years gamertags available

Microsoft already has a policy in place for inactive accounts. Users who don't sign into their Microsoft account for 2 years, the account can be deactivated. This timeframe was shorted from 5 years several years ago.

Keep in mind Microsoft accounts are used to access a number of Microsoft services, not just Xbox. Just because you don't see activity on an account, doesn't mean it's not being used.

If you want the tag, you either have to wait till it is freed up, or you will need to get it with a suffix, if it's available.

Keep in mind whatever you change your gamertag to, it needs to fall in line with the 'new' update guidelines from the 2019 gamertag update found here: https://support.xbox.com/help/account-profile/profile/gamertag-update-faq

If you haven't changed your Gamertag for a while(since the whole new Gamertag update) then you can change It for free but after you need to pay $10.

When was the Gamertag update?

They just updated the gamertag system so you should get a free change. https://support.xbox.com/my-account/manage-gamertag-and-profile/gamertag-updates-faq
You would need to go to https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag to change it.
