"Gamertag", you need a controller for this game.

I keep having an issue when playing games on my Xbox One S console. A window pops up during play that says: "Gamertag", you need a controller for this game. During which, the controller disconnects for around 10 seconds before becoming responsive again.

I have been having this issue for approximately 2 months. The only thing this console has had changed recently is that we've upgraded to an "Xbox Electric Volt" controller. I have tried many things to troubleshoot this issue. I will list the things Ive tried below:

- problem persists using both the regular Xbox One S controller and Xbox Electric Volt controller

- no problem when using wired AmazonBasics Xbox One S controller

- problem persists using different games

- completed a "soft" restore of the console

- reconnected the controllers using the connector buttons

- have used both AA batteries and rechargable packs

I am at a loss as for what to do next. The issue doesn't happen with my wired controller, but it defeats the purpose of having spent money on wireless ones. Using both the original provider wirless controller and a brand new one, I am not sure what could be causing this issue.

Can anyone please help?

Hello Toodalaroo, sorry to hear you're having trouble with your controller.

I can certainly understand where this could be frustrating. Xbox is aware of this particular issue although they have not mentioned when a fix would be made.

For the time being you can file a bug report via the Xbox Insider Hub. If you don't have it already istalled please install it then file the report via the app.

You need to go to where you sign in your gamertag profile and add a 2nd controller.

For this, your Gamertag needs to be a Gold account (which it currently is). Then invite a friend over with a second controller. Have your friend connect the second controller to your console, and when the console asks to sign that second person in, choose
the Guest account. You will now have two accounts signed in: PurpleSlug22(1) and PurpleSlug22(1).

In some cases, you need to start the game first, with no one signed in on the second controller yet. When the game asks you to press Start for the second player to join, do so, and have the second controller sign in as guest.

Look closely in the list of Gamertags, there is the option to create a new one, download an existing one and to sign in as guest.

You need to recover the gamertag. It can be done by pressing the Xbox button on the controller when in the Xbox Consoles Dashboard.

Did you download the map/booster packs with the same gamertag that you did the licence transfer? If not, you'll need to redownload them with that gamertag and then do licence transfer for that gamertag.

Or have that profile sign in on a second controller while you play with your "normal" gamertag.
