Gamertag 'taken' but user doesn't exist.

Gamertags are also used in other Microsoft services. If the system says it is unavailable, then it gave you the answer.

It doesn't matter how you think you've verified that it doesn't exist. The only way to know if you can have it is by trying to change your gamertag to it; if that process says it is in use, you can't have it.

Red Shift- I see what you're saying, but this GT doesn't exist and never has. The system is set up so only one person can use a gamertag, but this does seem to be glitched. I can look it up on xbox.com and it doesn't exist and on xbox it doesn't exist. Then
again, maybe it is taken as a Zune or Games for Windows account. Any way I could check this?

If the name change attempt tells you the gamertag is taken, it is taken. What's probably happening is that there's a difference in the spacing: I can't change to
RunningPubs because you are Running Pubs (with a space), but trying to send a message to
RunningPubs would fail because that variation isn't the one in use.

(I suppose you're trying to "purchase" a gamertag change, but these questions usually go in "Managing My Account", where there's a sticky post covering exactly this issue.)
