Gamertag System Limiting E-Sports Team Sizes Through Banning Of Prefixes

I've recently been signed by an E-Sports team, and I wanted to change my gamertag to reflect it. My current gamertag stretches back to something like 2013, so I need to trim it down for the new system too.

After trying a few options, it seems that Rhodey is fine to have in a tag, but the prefix SFM is not, despite other team members having it.

I contacted Xbox Support, and the guy on the line reckons that the system believes that there is too many SFM-prefixed gamertags. I don't think the system should be deciding team sizes, that's down to the team. And so if that's what's stopping my use of
SFM, that needs to be changed.

Yes so the hashtag prefix of a hashtag followed by 4 numbers denotes that the gamertag has already been taken and the numbers are used to distinguish it from others.

This new system is similar to Discord.

The four numbers are deducted from the old 16 character limit meaning that 4 characters will always be held aside to allow for situations like this.

This means that you can only now change your gamertag to those which are 12 characters or less. This means that gamertags that were longer before this new system are rare because you cannot get them under the current system.

I really do hope Microsoft restores the 16 character limit as the current system stifles creativity amongst its users.

Unfortunately there isn't. Keep in mind that your gamertag (and any prefixes) could be seen in regions all around the world. What may be appropriate to you may not be appropriate elsewhere.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the new Xbox gamertag system is (inspired by) already similar to Discord, saying that, if you connect your Xbox profile to Discord, you'd still be able to choose the username you prefer but the prefixes will be different
as this is randomly generated by xbox and discord respectively. I believe, if you really want the same username in Discord as your Xbox gamertag, you can subscribe to Discord Nitro to change your prefix to match your gamertag, given that no one has taken that
prefex yet.

I'm afraid there isn't a way to switch them. Transferring gamertags between accounts is impossible.

Ok, good to know. I have one other question that hopefully you can answer.

If I have a Gamertag that I created with the new Gamertag system that has no prefix and decide to change the Gamertag on that account to something else does that Gamertag I was using before become available again with no prefix required when a different account uses it? If so does it become available immediately?
