    Gamertag suffix issue

Hello, I recently changed my recent gamertag back to my old gamertag on Xbox using the new Gamertag sytem.

According to the new gamertag system, if a gamertag hasn't been taken by someone else and it's unique, a randomly generated #suffix (#1000) won't appear next to the gamertag.

The gamertag I have just changed back to is unique and hasn't been claimed by anyone else and yet, the system has added a #suffix next to it. I was able to change the classic gamertag part so it didnt have the numbers next to it.

    • For example, this is what it showed on the Gamertag change website:

Here is what your gamertag will look like

    (Not my real gamertag)

JohnSmith#1400 - Xbox One console and Xbox apps

JohnSmith1400 - Xbox games that don't support the new gamertag system * and all Xbox 360 experiences

    • I then removed the 1400 part from the classic gamertag so it shows as this;
JohnSmith - Xbox games that don't support the new gamertag system * and all Xbox 360 experiences

How can I get the #suffix removed from my Xbox One consoles and Xbox apps gamertag so it is the same as the classic one I have set?

Will Xbox support be able to remove the suffix for me?

    Sorry for a long post.

Appriciate any help I can get on this issue.

    :)

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thank you for sharing the issue.

When you changed your original Gamertag (A) to a new one (B), it became available for others to use. However, when you tried to revert back to Gamertag A, it received a numeric suffix. Here’s why:

    1. Gamertag Changes:
      • Xbox updated gamertags to support a 12-character max, Unicode-based name of your choice.
      • If a gamertag is already taken, a suffix with numbers is added to differentiate users with the same gamertag.
      • Existing gamertags remain unchanged with no suffix.
      • When you changed from A to B, A became available for others, and the suffix was added to prevent confusion.
      • Unfortunately, you cannot remove the suffix once it’s assigned1.
    2. Suffix Details:
      • Suffixes are subtle but always shown.
      • They appear everywhere except in friends lists.
      • Friends won’t see suffixes in their lists, but they may appear in games that support modern gamertags.

To summarize, your original Gamertag A now has a suffix due to the change. If you want to keep it without the suffix, consider choosing a unique gamertag.

    Gamertag suffix issue

    Hi KC,

Thanks for coming to the forums. Unfortunately, there is no way of removing the suffix. They added the suffix so many people could have same gamer tag. Example if multiple people wanted John smith then the suffix gets added to tell people apart. When making
a gamer tag, it will show you what the gamer tag will look like. If it is a unique one that no one has it will not show the suffix. Please make sure you check these when going to change gamer tag. There are a few gamer tag checkers out there that are not correct.
    Here is
    the FAQ
    for the gamer tag update.

    Thanks,

Hi Brad, the gamertag I changed to and using now was unique. I did previously have it linked to my second microsoft account before I closed the account. I changed my gamertag on my main microsoft account to the gamertag I had on my second microsoft account
once that account was fully closed.

As my other microsoft account was closed, surely there wouldn't be a suffix generated next to the gamertag because that account no longer has the gamertag tied to it?

    Changing Gamertag

Suffixes are 4 digits by default but depend on how many gamers have chosen that gamertag. For a 12-character gamertag, we are
limited to a 3-digit suffix. For an 11-character gamertag, we are limited to a 4-digit suffix. 10-character gamertag, 5-digit suffix
