Gamertag Reset

There was a gamertag that I typed in on my console that said it was available but gave me an error code and upon looking the code up, it meant the gamertag was either taken or unavailable, so I chatted with an xbox support agent only to find out that indeed
no one has the gamertag, it was just sitting there until the next time gamertags get reset which is disappointing. The xbox representative also said they had been waiting for a gamertag to get reset as well and xbox can't reset them until they are all deemed
"safe". I think either a reset should be done very soon because I'm sure we're not the only two waiting for one or a smoother system needs to be implemented so that someone doesn't get their gamertag they wanted that was "available" stolen while waiting for
xbox to make it usable.

It only works if their gamertag is the first one to sign in to a console. If you factory reset your console and have them do that it'll work, but that's a lot of re-installing to do.

Sorry, Microsoft does not accept requests to release gamertags. You'll just need to wait for the gamertag to be released. They don't tell anyone the date or time they will do such a thing because then people will just sit on a gamertag to sell it or something
of the sort which is not allowed at all. This way it gives everyone an equal chance to get the gamertag when its' released.

 

If someone doesn't sign into their account for 5 years (starting last year), the account will be freed up for use. Keep in mind that the tag system is also used on other Microsoft services, so even if it isn't being used for Xbox, it could be in use somewhere
else.

 

See I asked the representative about the whole 5 year thing, but they just kind of disregarded it and said that there should be a reset in the near future and if I post on the forums it might help speed the process, guess I'll just have to wait for it to
actually become available!

 

There was a reset recently but as smuwtches mentioned it's not an on demand service

Also should be noted that if it says it is not available it's not available

When you search for a name that's different

Searching for a name only checks for that specific spelling

Meaning names like ngoc phi would be not showned but it is actually taken as whenever you try and change the name

You will just have to be more creative or keep trying to figure out the exact spelling of the name that exists
