Gamertag not saving

I created a new Gamertag and although it was accepted, the old tag continues to show up. It is switching back and forth between the two. How do I get the new tag to stick and delete the old one?

Well, technically you can simply go and make a new Xbox LIVE Free Account, though I don't know how long it lasts in inactivity.

Considering the millions of Xbox users, it wouldn't be fair if everyone could put gamertags on 'hold'. But, the way you've mentioned could make sense. MS could allow (charge) users if they wish to place their own tag on hold when considering a change. Afterwards,
if someone doesn't like their new tag, they can change back to their old one.

That's commitment. I've had mine for a couple years. I suppose after a while, your gamertag starts to feel like your actual name. I'd certainly never change mine.

Lets remove and re-add the account alright that should do the trick.

Go to settings - account - remove accounts

Re - add the account bring up the side menu - go to the icon at the top above friends list - go left scroll down until you see add & manage click on it then click add new.

I don't see this happening, honestly. In truth, you should just pick at Gamertag that you like and that actually means something to you, and go with that. No need to change then. I've been "Juxtapose" for, what, about 15 years now (on other services first,
of course, then on Xbox LIVE)? No plans to change.
