Gamertag not available

I have this tag plus a new one that i just created. Ony my current tag, I checked the status of an available tag for my new account bc when you sign up, they just assign you one. Via the availability page, it said that the tag that I wanted, was available.
When I log in as the new tag and try to change it to that available tag, it is now telling me that it is not available. I thought, maybe it got taken in the time it took me to create the new account, but no. When I go back to this tag and check availability,
it still says its available, but it wont let me change the new tag to it. Any ideas why?

I'm very picky with names like this--specific criteria and all--and it took me forever just to come up with the name I wanted. I've already partially integrated this name so I'd either have to deal with my names being varied and not streamlined or start
that process all over and lose info., etc. for established accounts.

I heard that they occasionally purge inactive tags and make them available for the public to use. Do you know how often they do this? Is it worth waiting to see if the tag I want becomes available?

@davemcfly85 - I know those services are largely inaccurate but the point I wanted to make was that all indicators said the tag was not in use and was available, even those directly from Xbox LIVE. (I didn't realize that other Microsoft services use tags
from the same pool.)

I Have the same problem as you have I Want so bad that gamertag....I will wait some days to see if something changes I hope I get that gamer tag

Gamertag not available?

Gamertags are not used solely for Xbox accounts. They are also used for Zune and Games for Windows. Since they are not an on-demand service there is no purging timeframe for inactive gamertags. All you can do is keep checking the availability periodically.

If the system says it's taken, then it's in use somewhere on Microsoft's servers. The system does not see things like spaces as making a gamertag unique. So if you're searching for "gamertag" it may show as available but you cannot actually use it if it's
actually in use as "gamer tag".

I prob should have specified better. The tag I was trying to change to was 'Fight Scars' ... when I search for it, logged in as my original tag (this one), it tells me its available and gives me the option to claim it. When I log into the new tag and check
the same availability, its telling me that its taken. Im not sure why it would tell me its available on one tag, but not another.

For reference, this is my new tag, where its telling me that its not available. The other tag (from my original post), says it IS available when i search for it.

I think its a fault with the site. When I try to claim in when it says that it is available, it doesnt actually do anything, so its probably really taken and just having an issue on the site.

because when you search it doesnt see spaces as the same

when you try for a name it will check for the name with or without the spaces

the system will say if its available or not

check the suggested answer above

Even with that search option, the best way to find out if a gamertag is available is by trying to change yours to it. The search option will not show you gamertags that are used on other Microsoft services and if you were to search for "Gamertag" it may
not show it even though "Gamer tag" is in use. The system doesn't see the spaces as being different gamertags.

Well i was told to contact the forums about my situation because the gamertag is being reserved by someone that isnt paying for it.

The only official way to check for a name is to change your names.and if it accepts or not

Searching for a name like swmutches mentioned only checks for that one combination not included spaces or case

Which xbox doesn't differenitiates
