Gamertag Name Change Charge

This is my first xbox. When I was 13, I played Grand Theft Auto through Games for Windows Live. I did not know that this tag would carryover using my email address and this console.

Fast forward five years later. I purchased an xbox one and want to create a different gamertag but I'm being asked to pay a $10.00 fee for this. I never ever abused the gamertag name change and I should not have to pay $10.00 to change my tag. I called
several times and waited over 35 minutes to no avail. Finally, after being advised to chat online, I took that opportunity and that failed also. After over an hour, still no support. My chat session [Mod removed]

At the very least, the purchase of this system and all accessories should allow a one time change of gamertag free of charge. Please contact me soon.

gamertag XXX is no longer allowed

I ended up downloading my old profiles, but it wants me to pay 800 points to change that name. According to xbox policies I should be able to change my xbox gamertag once free of charge - "If you created your gamertag when you signed up for Xbox LIVE, you
can change your gamertag once for free." support.xbox.com/.../change-xbox-live-gamertag

Is there something preventing this name change for free, and will the old gamertag definitely be free'd up once I change it so I can change my current name "FUBAR PhD" to tptass?

Gamertag help

I was setting up my Xbox, I went to change my gamertag “one free change when first setting up your account” and I **** you not after I put in my name I wanted and selected yes “error” popped up, and now it’s trying to charge me to change my name... and yet
I still have the default gamertag it gave me...

Sorry, but you won't get any farther here. The only time you get a free name change is within the first 30 days of an account when the system gives you a randomly generated tag. After that, you have to pay. There is no way around it.

No, if the name is used, it is not possible to buy or change the gamertag. If you want gamertag Satan so you can add some digits to it, it is possible that it will change.
The first Gamertag change is free. Other changes are charged.

The change for free works only if the first gamertag was a random name created by the system. If you changed that name to your actual gamertag then you already used the free Token for that. Any other change would be charged. Hope that helps.

A gamertag change is charged if the user has changed it for free once. On Xbox Live, the gamertag is a way to identify the user, almost something that defines the user through it's name on the platform. To avoid difficulties in users changing name every now and then, and to create a circle of friends that know eachother through their gamertags, Microsoft allows the user to change it's own name by charging a fee on the second time (and onward) if they want a new name.

Yeah I bought the name charge, but it didn’t change and gave me an error. So I retried changing gamertag and it just changed to the one I wanted. So what I’m guessing happened was I bought the name change, it gave me an error but it basically allowed me to keep the name charge and let me change it using that charge I had bought.
