Gamertag Issue - No Error For Desired Name

Hey all!

So I just got my Xbox One yesterday. I noticed I was able to do a free gamertag change, so I was like, "Cool!"

Well, I ran into a problem. I'm not able to use my namesake/global alias I've been using the past few years.

The issue comes in when I go to use two different variants of the gamertag, it gives no error. Every other gamertag I've put in, or if I misspelled it, it gives an error, or offers other suggestions because it was taken, OR I almost hit "Looks good!" because
I got something I could use.

The original two, when put in, doesn't say or do anything, but instead goes back to the same menu of when you do "Make My Own" or take some of the suggestions. The gamertag is not taken, as I was told, so there's that.

I spoke to three different people at Xbox Support last night (while fixing some other issues) and none of them knew the problem. The last guy suggested I make this post on the forums to see who might be able to get some insight on this. All three of them
were very curious about it, though...

However, I looked up the two gamertags I wanted to use and they're taken, but with
no spaces. Does the problem come in that I can't use those because they're too similar? I was just perplexed because there was no error or any indication of a problem, and I was told the gamertags I wanted to use, without spaces, are not in
use.

I did ask the Support rep if I should list the details of the gamertags I wanted to use, but it is a public forum, so I shouldn't unless I speak directly to someone from Microsoft. Sorry, I gave all the details I could!

Can I combine Live accounts?

Unfortunately, saved games cannot be shared or transferred between profiles. If you wanted your saved data paired with your desired Gamertag name, you would need to follow these steps:

Change Gamertag 1 (from your desired GT to something else)

Wait at least 24 hours.

Change Gamertag 2 (to the desired GT that was changed originally)

There is no set time on how long it takes for a changed Gamertag to become available again, so you may have to wait longer than 24 hours to use it. However, this will allow you to use the Gamertag name you want with your saved progress.

I went to change my gamertag and when i put in the name and clicked check availability and it was available so i changed my gamertag but it didn't change my gamertag. When I try to change it to my desired name that I wanted it says its taken, any help?

 

Hey DD, so the issue is that they're already taken without spaces. The system does not differentiate between the two. For instance, because I use 13 nobody else can have 13 or M axen 13 and so on. This would be the reason why you cannot claim
your preferred names.

That's what I suspected, but wasn't sure. I feel like there should be some kind of error just to diffuse the confusion instead of nothing, but hey!

Just an additional question on your issue :

Is there a reason to not stick to your current gamertag? Do you know that you can continue using it on the One?

Just asking....

And I wanted to change it just because I've had a new name I've been using on -everything- and wanted to keep it universal. I also was kind of growing tired of this gamertag.

But yeah, I know I can use it.
