Gamertag is taken for my friend but not me.

I was trying to find a gamertag for my friend and I finally found one that didnt have numbers at the end. I told him to type it in his username change and it was taken for him and he was forced to have numbers. How do I get him to have the normal gamertag?

If you checked to see if it was available by starting a name change, the system will kind of reserve it for you for a bit so it'll appear to be in use for others. Your friend will have to wait a bit for that to clear up in the system.

"Adding the gamertag" tells you very little, because it doesn't account for spaces in the gamertag. If you try to change to a tag and the system says it is taken, it is taken.

What do I mean by spaces? You are "A N T E X v", so I can't have "ANTEXv". An attempted change will tell me that the second one is taken, even though I can't send a friend request to it.

I have been going round to use my friends xbox to do all of these changes. It has taken me months to get to the final stage.

Not all taken gamertags appear when you send a friend request to the gamertag. Until a gamertag is released by the original user, it is not available, even if their subscription lapses.

Already taken as Gamertag: B Lights. The system doesn't count spaces or capitals.
