Gamertag is available but won't let me change to it even though I already had that gamertag...

According to Xbox Support:

"If you receive a message that says a gamertag is unavailable, this means that you’ll need to try another. The gamertag that you’re trying to create is either inappropriate for the Xbox service or can’t be used at this time."

There's hope for the future, though. When a Gamertag is changed, the old one doesn't immediately become available.

If I change my gamertag today from "" to "I Am " it won't let anybody else change their tag to "" for some time.

I remember a year or so ago Major Nelson announced that many of the previously unavailable Gamertags would become available again. It's possible that if the gamertag you want was previously in use, but isn't anymore, it could become available again in the
future.

I spoke to Xbox support and there wasn’t anything they could do. As one Employees said it already shows that it had changed and the other Employee I spoke to claims that it’s because it’s 14 characters it needs to be 12 in order to be a main gamertag,
even though I changed my main gamertag on the Xbox 360. Therefore giving me 2 gamertags, a Display Gamertag and an In-game Gamertag. When changing it on the Xbox 360 should’ve updated my Display name as the 14 Character Gamertag and not keeping my 11 Character
Gamertag.

Hello, yeah but you didn't understand my "question". My gamertag is available. I shouldn't have those numbers and I know it because I have the original gamertag that i liberated by changing it in the first place. I can give the support the e-mails of both
the accounts that had this specific gamertag before I tried to change it to have it on the right e-mail account.

So now, even if I know MYGAMERTAG is available, I still have the dumb MYGAMERTAG1687 instead of the one without numbers, and if I want the one without numbers, I can't because it says I already have it, so to fix this I should use a OTHERGAMERTAG to change,
then change again to MYGAMERTAG to have access to the one without numbers (because, as I said, I know it is available as I have liberated it in the other account)

So none of my changes were worth anything and if I want the one with no numbers I have to pay 2 time the change as it won't let met change for the same gamertag without the numbers

Just to add on to what the others above me have said, i know that there is also the possibility that the last person with that gamertag had it reported for being inappropriate (not to say that it is, some people purposely get people to report the gamertag
so they can change, which is a bad thing). But if that happened, it would say that it is already "in use", even though it really is not
