Gamertag I want is showing as taken when it's not

I want to change my gamertag, but I don't want the numbers behind it. Multiple sources (gamertag.net, checkgamertag.com, etc.) say the gamertag I want isn't taken yet, but when I go to change it, it adds the numbers to the end of it as if someone else is
using it. What's the deal here? I already mistakenly paid for a change to my gamertag while I was messing around with it, so I wanted someone to look into this a bit more before I go any further. Thanks in advance for the help.

It is most likely taken somewhere in the realm of the microsoft servers. Maybe try a different unique gamertag?

Then my suggestion would be to pick a unique tag that is personal to you and might not be for someone else. Example use your middle name a variation of it with something you like a game etc. Apexedrab... That is unique to you isnt it... Play with it.
Only way someone would have that tag is that they know you personally and mirror your name.

If the system says it's taken, then it's taken somewhere on Microsoft servers. Keep in mind that the system doesn't see things like spaces as making a gamertag unique. So while you may be looking for "gamertag" it could be in use as "gamer tag".

it seems to me that there is a way after selecting the GT change so that the numbers are not visible during online games

I believe it just shows as the gamertag being already taken. Some advice when creating a gamertag: If you wouldn't shout it in church or in front of the elderly, it's probably inappropriate.
