Gamertag hasn't been active in almost a decade.

The gamertag "darkcell" hasn't been active in some time, I would bet in almost 10 years. I was wondering if this could be released so I can pay to change mine to it?

Freeing up old gamertags, ever going to happen?

Definitely hasn't been taken, the account hasn't moved in a decade, it's infact 'orphaned' where the email address on the account is now 'unbound' - it's completely idle.

 

My Old Gamertag

A few years ago I used the Gamertag "I Always Miss". When I changed it one of my friends used the Gamertag. The account is not active and hasn't been for a long time. I was wondering if there was any way to get my Gamertag back. Thanks

 

Gamertag's cannot be changed to free up used tags even after a specific period of time due to the possibly of purchases linked to it.

 

When someones tag gets changed do to it being reported, that account has purchases linked to it and the tag is simply changed then. So that doesn't seem to be a logical excuse that MS is giving.

 

The tag system is in use on other Microsoft services. So even if it's not being used on an Xbox, it may be in use somewhere else. If the owner does not sign into the account for 5 years (starting in 2016) it will be freed up for use. Otherwise, there is
no way to request a tag be released.

 

Is your gamertag the same as the one that your trying to get back just with some capital letters?

If so Microsoft's system does not recognize capitalization or space differences so Darkcell is the same as darkcell or Dark CELL
