Gamertag Has Suffix even when its unique

Gamertags are used on other Microsoft services,not just xbox live,so if it has a suffix then it is in use somewhere on the system.

The system also doesn't recognise spaces,captal letters etc. so you could look up GamerTag & it'll show as not in use when in fact it is in use but as GAMERTAG or gamer tag etc.

You cannot change the suffix that was added to your gamertag. If you'd like to change how the classic gametag appears for locations that don't support modern gamertags, you can se the "Customize classic gamertag" option when reserving your gamertag.
NOTE: A suffix is added when that exact gamertag is already registered. If you enter a unique gamertag, no suffix will be added.

Nobody will be able to claim the same gamertag without a mandatory, auto-assigned suffix. . The suffix is auto-assigned by Xbox to make sure everyone
is unique. Xbox doesn’t allow players to select their own suffix at this time. Once a user changes his gamertag, the previous one will be available to others. If
you want a gamertag without a suffix, you can! It just has to be a gamertag that hasn't been claimed by someone else, you can find out by checking availability when changing your gamertag.

Only if you have a gamertag with a suffix or special characters. If you have a unique gamertag that no one else has using standard characters, it'll show the same in all areas.

I checked and there is nobody that has the same user name as me

If it's giving you a suffix then its definitely in use.

Keep in mind the gamertag system doesnt see captilizations and spaces as making a gamertag unique so when changing your gamertag it would see "MyGamertag", "My Gamer Tag" and mygametag" all as the exact same gamertag.

When you are seaching manually to see if someone has a certain name or not you have to search for it EXACTLY as they have it otherwise itll say no one has that gamertag even though someone might actually have it but just with different captilizations or spacing.

For example lets say you are wanting the gamertag "MyGamertag" and you search to see if someone already has the gametag of "My Gamer Tag" itll say it doesnt already exist.

When you go to actually change your gamertag to "MyGamertag" it knows "My Gamer Tag" already exists and it will therefore put a suffix at the end of the gamertag you want.

Hopefully thats not too confusing but that's essentially how that works.

Tldr: if its giving you a suffix then someone DOES have the gamertag you want but could just have any number of combinations of changes between the captilizations and spacing.
