Gamertag Has Changed...?

Morning!

Around 5 years ago, I purchased an Xbox360 for the father-in-law. I set up a Live account and after a few months, the novelty wore off and he stopped using it. Fast forward to this month and we've decided to get him an Xbox One for Xmas. We've set it up,
logged him in and his gamertag his gamertag has changed.

Now, I know the log in details are correct because the same post-it note has been on his monitor for years. I do however seem to recall that Microsoft changed some Gamertags a couple of years ago when people had tags that were too alike. I'm also pretty
sure that anyone effected was allowed to change it.

I'll be honest, I saw the funny side but when my very large father in law saw his gamertag now incorporated "Teletubby", he wasn't overly impressed...

Any ideas? I begrudge paying almost £10 to change a gamertag that was changed without him knowing...

Sharing gold membership between accounts on xbone

Same console?
If a gamertag is logged into a console, then any other gamertags logged in to said console has access to all content from that first gamertag, and vice versa.

You would most likely need to give Xbox Support a call with the account details, maybe they will have a record as to why it was changed.

I didn't think that Xbox were changing Gamertags but deleting old ones that were no longer being used.

Microsoft have never changed gamertags that were similar & would never change someones gamertag unless it violated the CoC.

Not knowing the previous tag & what it is now I can't say whether that happened so, as mentioned,contact support

Have you had a chance to check that the purchase was completed? You can check your purchases and billing info over on
account.microsoft.com, if you don't see a transaction for the name change it sounds like it didn't go through. Let us know what you find

You need to wait for 24-48 hrs for the change to be reflected on the service servers. If you still have issues after that period you can contact xbox chat support account section to check this out: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/contact-us

Hello,

Please contact phone support if you believe that someone has gained access to your account in an unauthorized way. Once you're at the contact us page click Billing & Memberships,
under Account Management click Account Compromised/Stolen, and then finally Request a Call.
