    I have a complex situation that I am seeking a resolution too. I had an Xbox live account that had a gamertag "the Jesters ACE" this Microsoft account and all associated data have been deleted. so I am now trying on my current Xbox profile that I have been playing on for many years to change the gamertag to the "the Jesters ACE" tag. the name isn't anywhere on Xbox live yet it says the name is unavailable. I am performing this on the Xbox 360 console as it is the only way to get a gamertag is 15 characters long. I know this process still works because any other gamertag will go through and let me change the name but the tag I want says the name is in use. the reason I want this name is because it is a name I legally own and have used across all other platforms and is tied into my business franchise.

    I understand that but the Tag it's self is only useable on xboxlive the account and the xboxlive gamertag are 2 different names as such i can change my name to my my Microsoft account but on xbox live it remains Fur Dragon. The gamer tag is
    solely used for xbox live and doesnt affect the Microsoft account in any way.

    If you get a message saying it is unavailable, then it is unavailable. It could have been used on Xbox, GfWL, Zune, etc. No one in any support capacity has the ability to just "give" you a Gamertag if you as for it.
