Gamertag change not free

Hey guys, I feel like I need to give some background to how I got here (posting on the forums).

So I've had an Xbox account for an age (maybe 7 years now) and have no interest in playing online, so I never changed my Gamertag when I signed up (that I remember). Now I'm looking at possibly getting an Xbox One I thought I'd dig out my old account and
see if I had any purchases and whatnot that may be backwards compatible, etc... Upon logging in to my account I see the Gamertag I have and thought I'd go and change it. The page told me it was free for the first time and so I tried to proceed, only to be
told that I need to pay.

I did a search on here (as well as the xbox site and google which lead me back here) before posting and I found these:

This thread says that I had window after signing up to change my tag from the default one that was assigned:

Which would explain my issue but I haven't changed it at all that I can remember. I was left quite confused after the first two findings as they seems to be in contrast to each other, so not sure if the issue is because my account is old or because something
is wrong on the backend.

I hope I have provided enough info to get some feedback/advice on how to proceed. Would it be easier to just set up a new account? Apparently my account is a blank slate anyway.

Unrelated question: does the reputation start at 75% by default? Looking at my account where I've never played online, seems weird to not be a full bar

Gamertags to be Recycled 5/18/16!

Yeah, this is just in case you wanted one of the old gamertags...really shouldn't give free gamertag changes because they are recycling gamertags lol

 

Free Gamertag Change?

You only get the free change if the system created the gamertag for you, not if you created the gamertag. And the free change is only available for the first 30 days of the life of your gamertag.

So since you created the gamertag, you would not be eligible for the free change. You'll have to pay to change the name. At least you get to change your gamertag. On PSN there's no way to change your tag.

 

It used to be that you had 30 days to change it from a Microsoft generated tag to a personal one for free when you create your account but that changed & the 30 day time limit was removed.

What was you gamertag?

All rep starts at 75% & will either go up or down depending on how you behave on xbox live.

 

As I said, as far as I know it's always been what it is now. Not quite sure how to proceed. The support page that has anything to do with Gamertags just says to post on the forums. Besides posting this thread, I'm not sure what else I can actually do.

Odd.The tag you have looks like a generated one.

I suspect the 30 day rule still applies to your tag as you created it before they changed the time limit on when you could change for free.

 

So I guess at this my point my only options are either bite the bullet and pay or create a new account.
