Gamertag available and also taken??

I have an adult account (non-gold) and have parental control of my sons xbox live gold account. He wants to change his gamertag so I checked and its available. When I log in as him, it says it's taken. If I log out and back in as me it says its available.
Very confusing.

When logged in as him I tried some random gamertag to see if all were 'taken', but this is no the case. It seems it's just the specific gamertag he wants that reports as taken.

Why then is it available to my account? no rude words in it or anything...

Yeah, but if I changed that gamertag from Mosh1mo to something else, will that make that gamertag available or forever gone? I just want my gamertag for a new console... Not the games as he can keep them.

When you are looking for a new gamer tag you must try toymaker it

And no searching for it won't work.for.two reasons

One in order to.search for a gamer tag you have to be specific so is the same as or Ngoc phi

Itnwont show on search but you won't be able to take it

You will have to bel more creative with the spelling I that's all

 

The only way to check if a name is available is to try and take it if you tried to take it on your account your account would've the name already

What you did was a friend search which could mean you weren't specific enough to find the prrson

No, that's not it. I go into my gamertag settings to choose a new one, type in the name my boy wants, and its available to claim. If he goes into his account and 'pastes' the name in (exact spellling as I used) it says its unavailable.

 

Sorry to hear it. Even though the tag shows as available for the Xbox system it may still not be available due to its being in use for another service.

Microsoft has many services, both internal and external, that require gamertags. Once used for a different service it cannot be used on any other service except by the owner of that tag. I'm afraid that if the system says it's not available you won't be
able to claim that tag.

 

Also, the system doesn't see things like spaces as making a gamertag unique. So you may search "gamertag" and it says it's available, but it may be in use as "gamer tag"

 

But I can claim it using my login, just not with my son's login.

 

The reason is when making a gamertag or changing to a gamertag. When you look for a gamertag for example try to add it as a friend and it will say " gamertag does not exist on xbox live " but when you try to change it says it's taken. The reason for this
as the user of the gamertag has went inactive for a long time it's years before this happens and it's when there email has not been active as well. But the gamertag itself is still on xbox live system archive for if the user with the username ever wants to
come back. The gamertag will come back to active. I hope this helps.

The only way check is to claim it

If it says you claimed it then you checked not before

What you are doing is searching for a gamer tag which has to be exact spelling to find

But it will show as not taken but whej you claim it then it will.shoq it is taken because the system checks right then and there

 

These guys have no idea what you're talking about @JohnMurrayuk. Basically what happened was you reserved that GAMERTAG on your account and the other account won't be able to use that GAMERTAG because it's so called "reserved" all you have to do is wait
a couple of hours and try on the other tag I'm not sure but if it still doesn't work it means it was reserved for 24 hours not sure the time frame but yea just stop putting in the name on your account and use your sons to change the name when it becomes available.
