Gamer-tag says its taken when it actually isnt

Thanks for coming to the forums. We understand having an issue with a gamer tag. The gamer tag you are wanting could be in use by someone that hasn't played Xbox, but has signed into anything Xbox, either console or most likely website, with their Microsoft
account and set it up. But now they only use the email for lets say work. Also it could be the words used in the gamer tag as the system may deem them inappropriate.

Also to add the gamertag system doesnt reconize things like spaces as making a gamertag unique.

Lets say for example that the gamertag you want is "I Want This Tag". If someone else already has the gamertag "IWantThisTag" it will recognize that as the same gamertag as "I Want This Tag".

If you lookup the gamertag "I Want This Tag" it will say not found but if you lookup "IWantThisTag" it would find their profile. So thats likely why you aren't finding an existing account with the name you want. Likely because they have spaces in the gamertag
differently then how you are searching for it.

I don't agree with deleting inactive gamertag's that haven't been used in a while, but if you change your gamertag then the old one should be up for grabs instead of being put in limbo for an unspecified period of time.

Soo true Farscape247... Zune, uses your Windows Live ID & Gamertag etc..

The only thing is, the Gamertag will show content purchases on account & would show a recent date of activity etc..

You could try different variations of your wanted gamer tag, like for example, if your wanted gamer tag is ilikepie but it's already taken, you could try ilikepie1 or ilikepie2012 etc.
