I'm looking to change my GT to something but when I hit enter it just takes me back to the screen...     Hello! I was just curious as to how Gamertags work.

    I'm looking to change my GT to something but when I hit enter it just takes me back to the screen with xboxs (horrible) suggested gamertags; when I search the GT it says "We didn't find a match check the gamertag and try again."

    I'm not sure if maybe someone had it and they changed it and it'll take some time for it to become available for some reason, or maybe theres some other problem? I'll also add there are no swears or anything like that in the GT that would keep me from being
    able to make it that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Requesting an in use gamertag?

    If you've found it's an inactive tag, there's no way to have it purged:

    There are reasons why this happens. One reason is that a previous owner of the tag has had it banned for some reason. If this is the case then it would not be available and there is no way of telling when it would be released.

    Another reason is that the tag is being used for another service. Microsoft has many services in their family. These services use gamertags as well and if they are being used for one service they cannot be used for others.

    Also the way you spell it could affect your search results so is the same as ngoc phi and yes it will show up as taken but not as if I search ngoc phi to search for a name your have to be specific to use a name you have to be creative like
    replacing an e with a 3 etc

    It still shows up an as account. So if you look it up and the account is the one you used to use, you would need to be able to sign into that account and change the name in order to free it up for use. Otherwise, if you look it up and it looks like it is
    someone else, then there is no way to use it.
