Gamer Tag and Account not Used

I am wondering when a person had a gamer tag and old email address that has been canceled why Microsoft still lists them for example on a friends list? I would think that that does take up space somewhere and since that old gamer tag in some cases will never
be logged into or used again they really should remove it?

So, how many of you are 10 year Xbox Live gamers?

I started with the xboxlive beta with the headset and MotoGP disk, but I currently have a new different gamer tag due to my associated Hotmail account going inactive, due to not logging into email, and thus preventing me from renewing the live account. I had to create a new account while I went through the steps of recovery for the Hotmail address. Once recovered, I simply stayed with my new gamer tag... Now associated with the old Hotmail account. :-(

the gamer tag with gold... Would that person happen to be using that gamer tag in another Xbox?

Its probably something to do with the reason they charge for a gamertag change.

Forget the cost for a moment. What I mean is that the cost controls someone create lots of alias's on a single account. Perhaps its the same with the unused name. Someone could have had a great reputation but for whatever reason no longer uses that account.
If someone could then use that same name because its no longer in use, then it could cause many problems for the original owner of the tag.

Thats just my assumption though.

They occasionally release/delete 0GS silver accts if they haven't been used in years, my tag was a 0GS acct for around 4 years, I kept tabs on it every week and one day it was available so I snagged it. If the acct has any GS on it though it'll never be
deleted as it was clearly owned by someone that used it at some point and may well make use of it again.

try changing the gamer tag on the old account then you should be able to use that gamer tag on your new account.

It takes 7 years for a Gamer Tag to recycle. You also have to understand that someone who created a Gamer Tag 6 years ago doesn't need to have an Xbox account in order to use the Windows Live ID that is associated with the account. As long as the email
is being used the gamer tag is being used.

Hello Ronin,

Some people have a gamer tag but never use it on Xbox. If they are using the Microsoft account attached to the gamer tag then the account is still active. They could be using the MS account to sign in on a laptop or windows phone. There is no direct branch
of Microsoft that handles this. Microsoft when they decide to, will release gamer tags that are not in use again. It could be a very long time though.
