  1. Game updates? (new to Xbox One!)

Hello. So I've recently purchased my brand new Xbox One and I've been so excited, until I started to read some troubles about game updates and how long they could take. To put it clearly my internet connection isn't very reliable at the moment, something
I hope to change soon. Never the less I'm stuck with it for now.

I'm well aware of the day one mandatory update, and hopefully that goes smooth. My question is do the games HAVE to be updated before playing them? My internet is data capped so a bunch of mandatory updates are out of the question. Basically I'm asking once
the Xbox One has had its day one update, and the games are installed, are you good to go? Or do you have to download updates for each game before playing? Can they be played offline?

I'm getting Ryse, Ghosts, GTA V, and Halo the MCC. And yes I'm aware of a massive 20gb update for Halo for multiplayer.

    Thanks for any help.

    :)

    Welcome.

I'm a very casual gamer dad myself.

Do yourself a favour and get Forza Horizon 2. It's a super casual game and I've met a lot of really great laid back gamers playing that game.

    Add me if you like.

If you are connected to LIVE when doing a game install, the install time will increase as the console will always (at the moment at least) download the latest game update before installing the content from the Blu-ray disc.

To get around this issue, disconnect your console from Xbox LIVE and install your game in offline mode. You can then download the updates for your games later. At the moment, if you wish to play a game offline without installing a patch, you must disconnect
your console from Xbox LIVE. You do not need to download an update to play the single player portion of a game, simply install the game offline and play from there.

Once you have the day one update for the console, you will not be required to install any further updates until you connect your console to LIVE again. Please note that to play any games online with other Xbox LIVE players, your chosen game
MUST be updated to do so.

    Hope that helps.

  5. Thanks for your help! That's the kind of answer I was hoping for!!!

I know this is being a bit nit picky, but I'll ask anyway. Can I still connect and enjoy other online features of Xbox One, such as the apps, or will doing so automatically start a bunch of game update downloads?

  6. Xbox One will only attempt to download game updates if either they are started while the system is online or if the console is set to 'Instant on' - in which case the console would update games automaticaly while in a low power state. Otherwise, no, the
console will not download game updates, you should be prompted for them. You can see if any updates are being applied from the 'My Games and Apps' App on the Xbox One dashboard.

I don't think the day one update for the consoles is that big a deal anymore. I got mine around July and it only had a relatively small patch around 240MB rather than the huge one that the first batch of consoles needed.

So my Forza Motorsport Xbox One Edition doesn't have the new dashboard update and it's been awhile now and there's been no updates available for my Xbox one does my Xbox One not support it or wht.

Yes, it is likely that your Xbox One will not be compatible with the new Forza Motorsport dashboard update or with game updates in general, as Microsoft is focused on the new generation of consoles, the Xbox Series X and S. The Xbox One is no longer being updated and Microsoft has already announced that it will end support for the Xbox One, but has not yet said when.

    Elaboration:

Xbox One at the end of its cycle:

Microsoft is increasingly focused on the new generation of consoles (Xbox Series X and S) and, therefore, support and updates for the Xbox One are being reduced.

    New dashboard update:

It is likely that the new Forza Motorsport dashboard update, or other game updates, will not be compatible with the Xbox One.

    Focus on the next generation:

Microsoft has already announced that it will end support for the Xbox One, and its attention is directed to the Xbox Series X and S, the most recent generation.

    System updates:

Your Xbox One may no longer be receiving system updates, or the updates you do receive are only to ensure the security of your console.
