Game updates downloading only on default drive not the drive the game resides on

Hi All! I have an Xbox One X, and I have two other attached drives. I have certain games on certain drives, but I can only have one default drive for downloading, just like everyone else. The problem is, the games I have on the other two drives that are
not the default, are being re-downloaded/updated on the defaut drive only, thus making a second game file. I would think games would get updated automatically where they reside, but that is not happening with me.

    I have a 4TB WB Book, and a Samsung 1TB SSD, attached.

The 4TB is the default download drive.

Gears 5 just updated and I found a full file on the internal drive, and the 4TB WB. This has happened with other games as well.

Prior to the update, Gears 5 was only residing on the internal drive.

Now that I think about it, when I've downloaded DLC, the DLC went to the default download drive, not the drive where the main game resides . . .

    Thanks

    B

    :)

Game updates downloading only on default drive not the drive the game resides on

    Hi

I had a similar issue, although I only had one drive. In my case, it was a mix of the drive shutting down due to "inactivity" and that the full size of the game plus the update was more than it had left.

In the case of the power settings of your console. Check if you have the option "When Xbox is off, turn off the storage," unchecked on your settings. You can check detailed instructions in this link. https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/hardware-network/power/learn-about-power-modes

Also, be sure to have enough space on the hard drives, it might be that the update+ the game file might more than you have left, so for example in my case the update was let's say 200 MB, and the game 700 MB, but I only had left 350
MB, so it could download, held the patch, but then it was missing space to apply the patch. (though 4tb sounds like more than enough)

Check if any of these two links have information that might help you:

    https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/hardware-network/storage/manage-storage

    https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/hardware-network/storage/console-doesnt-detect-external-storage

    I hope this helps

I tried your suggestion with the "When Xbox is off, turn off the storage" as unchecked. Still made no difference.

Just last night I was having issues with Split/Second recognizing my DLC for whatever reason, that's a different topic for a different time . . . ANYway, I have Split/Second and all its DLC on my internal drive, and my WD 4TB as my default download location.
I deleted all the DLC for Split/Second, again, which was on the internal drive, but left the main game on the internal drive. When I went download my ready to download items for this game, which is on the internal drive, my Xbox started to download all the
DLC onto the default drive, which is the external WD 4TB.

This is not an Xbox 360 game issue, this has been the case with Xbox One games as well. I've found two copies of the same game located on different drives, one being the default download location, the other being where I want it stored.

I would think the Xbox would be able to detect where a game is stored before downloading the game again for update reasons, or DLC, or whatever. This seems to be an internal logic issue, not a "don't have the right box checked" issue. I don't remember my
Xbox behaving this way with one external drive. But with two external drives, it now is an issue.

    Thanks

Hey, thanks for reaching out! Well, firstly, I have plenty of room on all of my drives, soooooooooooooo that is not a factor. I have my Xbox One X set to stand by as my power setting. And I do have my external drives set to turn off when my Xbox is turned
off. The "When Xbox is off, turn off the storage" is chosen in my settings. And I have my default drive as my external WD 4TB. With all that said, my Xbox is not choosing where a file is already sitting. And my
Xbox sees all of my drives all of the time.

I will try the "When Xbox is off, turn off the storage" as unchecked. Maybe that will make a difference . . . but if my default drive is an external drive . . . . and games are downloading there, new and updates . . . . . and "When Xbox is off, turn off
the storage" is checked . . . why would anything still be put there if "When Xbox is off, turn off the storage" it's off . .. . . ? I do understand the instructions, but as to what that means as far as "when xbox is this, external drives will do this" setting
it's hard to differentiate. Because you have the xbox that can be completely shut down vs. stand by, and how does those settings inform the "When Xbox is off, turn off the storage" setting. You tell me.

    Thanks

    Updates download location

Updates can only be downloaded to the drive where the game is located.

So, even if you have the external set as the default download location, if your game is located internally that is where the update will go. You can't have a games and updates on different drives.

Updating a game causes me to have to reinstall the ENTIRE THING

If the external hard drive is the possible cause then try and update something while the hard drive is disconnected.

It may be that your game is on the external hard drive but your default location for downloading games in your internal hard drive so when it goes to update it can't find the game as it isn't in the default location. If this is the case you would need to
make sure that the games being updated are on the internal hard drive before updating.
