Game updates are the same size as the games themselves, MUCH larger than they say they are

I tried updating Destiny 2 yesterday (the update came out the day before) and it said the update was just over 100MB. So I selected to install the update, and it started an "update" of over 42GB which took well over an hour! My friends did the same update
and theirs took seconds as it should. The same thing happened last week, where the Destiny 2 update for the first Expansion was 6GB but mine was also over 42GB also!

It's not just Destiny 2, the same thing has happened with Star Wars Battlefront 2 before these two updates for Destiny 2 in the last couple of weeks or so. It actually happened again when I went to try and play Star Wars Battlefront 2 earlier! It said it
was a 10GB update, so selected it and it started doing a 58GB "update"!!

With each update, it's like it's installing the game again but with the update also at the same time.

I've had 3 Microsoft Support Chats recently and had no luck. They got me to do a factory reset which fixed a different download issue (some games like Dead Rising 3 just wouldn't download and came up with an error), but did not fix this one, unfortunately.

I have pictures taken from my phone to show what is happening.

Many thanks for anyone that can try and help!

Hard-drive space running out on xbox one

The updates don't necessarily add that much size to the game. They might be large in download size, but they replace content already installed. So, a 13GB patch may only add 2GB or less to the total size of the game. The patches themselves must probably
get deleted in addition to the game install.

And, as noted before, external HDs are coming, and are a top priority.

    Xbox one massive download size

Game sizes can vary, but in general they are going to be much larger than 360 games basically due to different technology. So that is very normal.

Why does my game need a 60GB UPDATE?

The size of the update varies from game to game, it is normal for some to be larger than others.

    install times

The other contributing reason is that the actual game file sizes are so much larger on Xbox One than anything on Xbox 360 - coupled with potentially large updates to download, this takes much more time than the 360's installation process.

Is this external drive big enough?

Thanks for the update. Glad it worked out for your needs.

It is just 250 GB is really small with the size of today's games. For the same money you could get a much larger HDD and be able to store many more games.

    Happy gaming!!

Sorry to hear that you are missing out. Unfortunately Microsoft can't reduce the size of a game and still keep it functional. The size of the game on disc is the same size as what you would download. The only thing you can do is acquire a larger storage
device to hold games of a larger size such as this.
