Game progress from parent account to child account

My kids have been using the parent account by mistake and clocking up all their progress on my account instead of on theirs. Now they want Xbox live I want to make sure the parental / child settings are all done properly. Stopping any spending and restricting
contact but how can they keep their progress while I do this. Surely I will be restricting the parent account? Can I transfer the game progress to my kids account or as I don't even use xbox change the parent account to become the child account?

You can create a child account on your current parental account. You can not transfer games, saved progress etc. You can set the parental account to Home Xbox and the child account would have access to the games but not the saved progress.

It is not Microsofts fault that a child account was not set up.

thank you for this. If I make my parent account and associated email address a child account instead will I need to/ should I add an additional account to act as the parent?

Unfortunately you cannot transfer progress and all progress is on the account it was originally made on

Yes. You need to have a family where there's at least one adult account. That account can invite family members as adult or child.

You should always have own account for everyone. Unfortunately progress/saves cannot be transferred from one account to another.

Regarding a question that can you make an adult account part of your family group as a child? Yes you can. You just need to add the email address as a child to your family and from that account accept that invite.
