    Game File Sizes On Gamepass

    Hello,

Does anyone have any insight as to why games like Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and others are far exceeding their typical file sizes on other platforms? Fallout 3 on Gamepass is just over 43 gb and New Vegas is just over 46 gb. On Steam, Fallout 3: GOTY Edition requires only 7 gb while New Vegas Standard requires only 10 gb.

Why are the file sizes so large on gamepass? These games are over 10 years-old now.

    :)

Language files affect the WHOLE GAME

And has to be localized I don't think you realize the issue xbox one games are language indepedent

Meaning you pick on the fly

And console programs are NOT like pc files

They have to be complete not service patches here and there yes they do get updates but consoles are more stricter

None of that changes the fact that Steam, or really any other digital store/service for games is obviously much better at handling this sort of thing than Gamepass PC, same with update sizes which I'll get into. BTW I say all of this as someone that has been a Gamepass sub for several months and thinks it's a fantastic value. But the service and the Xbox app on PC are inferior/lacking major features in many ways compared to every other digital store/app for games like Steam, Epic Game Store, GOG Galaxy etc but I'll explain why at the end. First let's talk about what must have stopped Microsoft from making not just Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition, but also all the Elder Scrolls games, and Fallout 3 GOTY edition do the same thing and make you to download the audio for the game in 5 different languages making them on average ~500 percent bigger than the exact same game from Steam or GoG.

The fact that Microsoft can't do something as simple as detect the language Windows is set to and automatically either download just the audio for that language, or have multiple XVD images available for download, one for each language and instead creating on gigantic XVD forcing everyone to download the game in 5 different language is pretty pathetic. You don't actually think Fallout New Vegas Ultimate edition on Xbox 360 was ~80 GB do you? You do know a dual layer DVD can only hold about 8.5 GB. Besides who says Microsoft must deliver games as basically ISO images (XVD is the ISO equivalent of an Xbox disc). Seems like an awful idea with lots of limitations.

Even Elder Scrolls Online on steam handles this better. Yes, it dose download the audio for each language they have dialogue for, but you can easily go to the games install directory and just delete the vo_xx folders you don't need, so I just deleted all of them except vo_en and got ~20 GB back. When ESO comes to Gamepass PC I guarantee it will download the audio files for every language, but of course you won't be able to just delete those folders you don't need because of how SUPER locked down the files are. And God knows how updates will be handled for ESO when it's on Gamepass PC.

Compare the size of patches as well when they come out for games like Halo MCC, The Ascent, Gears 5, or any other game that's on Gamepass PC and Steam. The Gamepass PC update will always be MUCH larger than the steam update. I remember when I played The Medium on Gamepass PC. It got a patch released one day on Steam, Gamepass PC, and Xbox. The Steam patch was a few hundred Megabytes, the update for the Gamepass PC Version was 12.5 GB (about the same size as the Xbox update was, so probably a limitation of MS deciding to use XVD's on Windows as well). Same update, same patch notes, the patch notes had nothing specific for the Gamepass PC version. I know ESO is not on Gamepass PC yet, but just compare it's update sizes between PC and Xbox and it's the same thing. The same updates are MUCH smaller for PC. The last big update that released with the latest expansion/chapter was 6.6 GB for PC/Mac, and 70 GB for Xbox.

It's either a limitation of Microsoft deciding for whatever reason to distribute games through their store/service as XVD's or perhaps the Microsoft store, or the APPX packaging. Either way it's extremely inferior when it comes to efficiently updating games/apps. There is VERY obviously some limitations that require developers to make the patch for the Gamepass PC version MUCH larger than the steam version. Most games store a lot of their data in something like a .PAK file or something similar, Sort of like a ZIP file. I'm guessing something to do with Gamepass PC (be it the XVD format, or the Microsoft Store etc) requires them to have to replace entire files even if they are only updating parts of its contents. Compared to Steam or any other service where the dev can just send only what's changed and update the data inside that file, not have to send a new copy of the entire file with the changes/additions in it.

As for the other things Gamepass PC lacks or falls way behind in compared to Steam or any other digital games store/service. Being forced to delete all of your games if you have more than one drive and have Gamepass games on something besides your OS drive after you do a clean install of Windows. Even though you're signed in with the same Microsoft account that downloaded those games, and a Microsoft account with a still active Gamepass sub. It's just dumb. Steam, you just tell it where to look, it updates the games if they need it and that's it, same for even Rockstars little store/launcher. Also, lackluster mod support. Even games labeled as "supports mods" can't use any mod that requires anything more than just adding files to the games install directory. No replacing any file or modifying them (makes things like Skyrim script extender, something A TON of mods require, impossible to use with the Gamepass PC verson of Skyrim).

because the gamepass version will probably be the xbox version in an xvd image, hence the bloated size. some games on gamepass are just altered xbox games with limited option too.
