Game completely uninstalls when I stop an update

Quite a strange thing is happening to me. So strange, I didn’t realize what was happening until just now. I’m on the Xbox one S. Every time I try to stop an update or clear my queue of all updates, it completely uninstalls my game. For a specific example, anyone who has played “gears 5” or “MCC” knows you can pick and choose certain content to install or uninstall for preferred space. I started to install the campaign of “gears 5” by accident and decided to go to queue and stop it from downloading. I didn’t hit uninstall. I didn’t hit pause. There’s an option in the queue to clear all. That’s what I used. The campaign was only 10GB yet I noticed 70GB have just been freed. I go to my games and apps and gears 5 is uninstalled.

Games that give you the option to install certain content isn’t the only problem. Even if I stop an update from happening, it tends to uninstall the respective game I stopped the update for.

What’s happening here? Is there something I can do? Am I being dumb? I’ve had this Xbox since 2015 and have never had this issue

thats what it does, microsoft does not have a file verification tool and as the game is updating it replaces files as it goes and if canceled it does not know how much it has done and if there is corruption.

so if you cancel an update or it fails then the entire game is removed

I appreciate the reply. It’s funny Microsoft would have two incredibly popular games with the ability to uninstall and reinstall content but if you accidentally reinstall something you don’t want you’re screwed.

Hello Godzilla,

Microsoft isn't responsible for all updates. They are from the developers of the game and most times are necessary as bugs get fixed, new content, etc. We recommend to install the complete update first before playing. Also if you cancel the update there
is a big chance it will uninstall the game too as to stop the game from being corrupt when you install the update again.
