Game Capture to External Drive DOESN'T WORK??

Hi all,

So this 'Fall Update' is supposed to allow us to record gameplay straight to an external hard drive, providing it's formatted NTFS and at least USB 3.0. I'm using a drive that is both of these things and it is just not working at all. It recognises that
a drive has been plugged in, but when I try to set it as a capture location, it'll either tell me the drive isn't fast enough (it is...), or that it needs to be formatted in NTFS (it is...).

Anyone else experiencing this or know how to fix it?

XBOX Game Video DVR

Since the last update, the game recording function has become unreliable. I am recording to an external drive. When I try and capture a game moment from the DVR menu, it doesn't always work, nothing gets recorded. The only reliable method is to start a
recording before playing.

Game DVR always saves on C: even if i move the folder

Hi,

To see where your captures are saved, open the Xbox App, select Settings, and then select Game DVR. Under Saving captures, select Open folder to see your captures in File Explorer.

By default, game clips and screenshots are saved in your Videos folder, in a folder named
Captures. This can be moved to different places on your PC, including elsewhere on your hard drive or to external drives. Your Windows 10 PC saves the default storage to where the Captures folder is created.

Sorted now! After a fair number of reformats of the drive and repeatedly resetting the console, it eventually worked! Quality is great too, looks exactly as it did when playing. Good times!

Just a Volunteer

There is only a finite space on the console internal drive to store captures.

To my understanding, if you make a lot of game clips and screenshots that space is quickly used up and any subsequent captures will overwrite the oldest file on the drive if its full. This space is a reserved area in the system area and not the entire drive space.

If you upload your captures to the Xbox Network and/or OneDrive you can safely delete the captures on the internal drive using Manage captures on xbox console.

The alternative is to connect a external drive, formatted to NTFS, and change your capture location to the external drive. Be aware that this option doesn't allow sharing on the Xbox Network.

Depends on the space of your harddrive. If you have a One X, you can capture in 4K for up to an hour on an external drive, if you have enough space on that drive for one hour of 4K video.
