Frustrated new xbox one owner - have I got the installation process right now?

Father of a new xbox one owner here, excited that he can transfer his Destiny stats over from xbox360 & has 3 shiny new games on disc: Destiny, Forsa & Doom

He was very excited but now 2 days later he is a very frustrated bunny:

I've tried to work it out but I'm struggling.

Admittedly I am in the country with a slow download speed, but have I got this right about installing games from disc onto the xbox one:-

1) All games have to be loaded onto the hard drive before play (dvd drive is too slow)

2) if you are online, the xbox will ignore the data on the disc and try to download everything (basic game & online updates) from the web?

-- seems odd on slow connections

3) If there are updates to the game, these are downloaded first,
before the basic game is downloaded

--- slows down time to first game

4) to get around point "2)" you can go offline and it will load the basic game from the disc

-- best to wait for the 100% signal before starting the game

5) But as soon as you play the game when you are online, or go online(?), it will demand that you immediately download
all new updates, and you can't play the game again until that download is finished (unless you wipe the disc and start again)

-- this seems weird as a piece of design as it was happy to play the game before it knew about the updates, and it would be really nice to continue to play the game while the updates are downloading in the background. Can this be true?

-- I see now that Destiny has a subtle "requires internet" flag on it, but Doom & Forsa does not. However it seems they do as soon as you go on-line?? Which it seems you must as you need a valid microsoft profile to play it(?)

6) the updates are big(!). Both Forsa and Doom have said the updates are 6GB+ and Destiny looks to be 20GB+. I'm not sure if there are any more to come before we can play a game

-- this is annoying if you have a slow download speed e.g. 6GB with 1MBps download is over an hour & a half with a following wind (not had one so far)

--- and really annoying if the games server creaks to a halt, or the process stalls for some reason

-- I've seen a few threads on rebooting tricks, on flushing MACs & disc caches, and pointing the DNS to the google server

-- its probably best to make sure the xbox does not go to sleep overnight

--- the bandwidth summary page is useful as you can see that the downloads are doing some work (seeing something stuck at 1% is not reassuring)

Anyway mustn't grumble but this all seems very odd as I can't be the only one with poor internet.

I would really appreciate any comments to say which bits I got right or if am missing something obvious

I think I'll need to find a friend with fast internet to bring a smile back to my kids faces ....

NFL App: Can't install or update anymore

Hi,

Some days ago my Xbox one tried to install an NFL App update overnight but the installation process got stalled.

Since then I can't install the app anymore. I've tried to remove the app and reinstall it from the marketplace but the installation process stops every time.

Any suggestions?

 

Can't Install Metal Gear 5

So I have tried every trick online and the steps that are posted on this forum. No matter what I do when the installation hits 15% the Installation stops. I have tried everything and am becoming frustrated. This is a Brand new Xbox One S and I'm already
having these issues!!! If anyone has a method that actually works please let me know.

1: Yes,all games need to be installed.

2: No,what it is doing is downloading any updates needed in order to play the game.

3:As you mentioned,if you install a game from disc it will be a bit quicker if you are not connected to live.

Once you have installed it,connect to live then download any updates needed.

Some games let you start before the update has finished downloading but most don't.

As for the size of an update,a lot of them are adding free extra content which you would need to play the game.

Forza added more tracks,Destiny added quite a bit of new content,which is why they are that size.

It will take a while with your internet speeds so other than upgrading your broadband or just being offline all the time there's not much else you can do i'm afraid.

I disagree with your point 2 though. I could play forsa & doom from the basic game stored on the discs. So I didn't need any updates the play the game.

Point 3 is obvious now but I had to read several forums to work out what was going on i.e. don't go online.

It's only when you go online, then all the updates are forcibly downloaded before you can play the game any further. This seems pretty illogical (dumb) as there is no reason (apart from poor design) why they can't be downloaded in the background, and then
combined, leaving the existing versions of the game running.

Free extra content is of course great (destiny??), but they should allow it to download in the background on xbox one. I've had the console 3 days now and we are not nearly ready to play.

 

Yes,you can play the disc or digital version offline without the updates.Sorry,i should of been more clear about that.I was just going by if you were playing while connected to live.

Unfortunately if your internet speeds aren't that great this will be a problem now as there are so many big updates on games.
